As soon as it is drawn OnCourt Advantage will add the names into the projected round of 16 match-ups for the seeds and post the full singles main draw here-> The 2012 Charleston Open Women’s Singles Draw: 1st Round.
The Seeds: In a 64-player sized draw there are 16 seeded players in order to keep the 1 seed for each 4 spots in the draw ratio according to tournament draw rules. Charleston has a 56-player draw so only the Top 8 seeds all receive a BYE in the 1st round and await the 24 winners of the 1st round matches in the 2nd round.
The seeds are selected according to the latest WTA rankings before the draw is made i.e. as of 19 March 2012. The Top 16 ranked players in the draw at that date become the Top 16 seeds; therefore the seeding can be worked out before it is officially announced.
The 2012 Charleston Open women’s singles seeds are:
- Seeds 1-8: 1-Agnieszka RADWANSKA, 2-Samantha STOSUR, 3-Marion BARTOLI, 4-Vera ZVONAREVA, 5-Serena WILLIAMS, 6-Sabine LISICKI, 7-Jelena JANKOVIC, 8-Anastasia PAVLYUCHENKOVA;
- Seeds 9-16: 9-Lucie SAFAROVA, 10-Anabel MEDINA GARRIGUES, 11-Christina MCHALE, 12-Yanina WICKMAYER, 13-Nadia PETROVA, 14-Polona HERCOG, 15-Chanelle SCHEEPERS and 16-Jarmila GAJDOSOVA.
If any of the seeded players withdraw before taking the court for their first match I will update the seeded players list above straight away. That seed would be replaced by the next highest ranked direct acceptance i.e. Marina ERAKOVIC as the World No.49. If any further seeds are unable to play this compulsory major tournament No.51 Galina VOSKOBOEVA becomes a seed.
The Wild Cards: wildcards have been announced so far are Anastasia PAVLYUCHENKOVA of Russia and three Americans Irina FALCONI, Venus WILLIAMS and Jamie HAMPTON.
The Qualifiers: The 48-player qualifying tournament begins on Saturday 31 March and concludes on Sunday 1 April.
