The Seeds: In a 32-player sized draw there are 8 seeded players. This means that all of the 8 seeds are separated in the draw so they cannot meet before the quarter final stage. Therefore, the Top 8 seeds play two rounds against lower ranked opponents who are unseeded, before they can meet another seed.
The seeding is allocated to the 8 highest ranked players according to the latest ATP rankings BEFORE the draw is made. These latest rankings were released on Monday 25 June. Usually the most recent rankings are the closest Monday before the draw is made, which was 2 July. However, during a Grand Slam tournament the rankings are not updated until the conclusion of the two-week event.
The 8 seeds were ranked from World No.10 John ISNER through to No.53 Gilles MULLER. The last direct acceptance into the main draw was Marco CHIUDINELLI of Switzerland who was ranked No.136 at the cut-off date.
The Wild Cards: the three wild card recipients were former World No.1 and dual Grand Slam singles champion Lleyton HEWITT of Australia and two American players: Ryan HARRISON who originally did not enter this tournament or else he would have been directly accepted and Jack SOCK.
The Qualifiers: The 32-player qualifying tournament sets the task of winning 3 best-of-three tiebreak set matches in order to qualify for the main draw. These four players then have their names added to the draw and they were: Sergei BUBKA, Izak VAN DER MERWE, Benjamin BECKER and Tim SMYCZEK.
