The 2012 San Jose SAP Open men’s qualifying singles event began on Saturday 11 February at 10am local time in San Jose, Northern California in the USA. The 4 players who qualify to enter the main singles draw need to win three straight matches in the knockout qualifying singles event. The official tournament name is the SAP Open due to title sponsorship naming rights.
If YOU are close enough, make sure you drop by the Courtside Club Resort, 14675 Winchester Boulevard, in Los Gatos, California to catch the qualifying live AND free-of-charge. Make sure you take note that the SAP Open qualifying is held at a different venue to where the main draw is being held.

The 8 seeds were chosen according to the ATP rankings as of Monday 6 February and the entry deadline was 2 January 2012. The last direct acceptance to make the cut-off into the qualifying draw was Clayton ALMEIDA from Brazil who was ranked at No.1,251 at the entry deadline date.
The Top 8 seeds are ranked between No.152 and No.250 in the world. Four of the eight qualifying seeds are Americans (Rajeev RAM, Michael YANI, Denis KUDLA and Tim SMYCZEK). Three of the four qualifying wild cards are Americans as well, Jeff GAST, Dennis NOVIKOV and Nicholas EDLEFSEN. The fourth qualifying wild card was awarded to Pedro ZERBINI from Brazil.
A quarter finalist at the 2011 SAP Open was Ricardas BERANKIS who is pictured above at the US Open waiting for the ball to come to him in preparation to play the show boating jump double-handed backhand. The talented 21-year-old is the No.2 seed in the qualifying tournament this year after dropping from his current career-high ranking of No.73 on 31 January 2011 to his current ranking of No.153.
The 1.75m Berankis has played seven men’s Grand Slam single events so far in his young career and at all four Grand Slams at least once each. The Lithuanian achieved his best Grand Slam singles result to date by making the 3rd round at the 2011 Australian Open. The former World No.1 ITF Junior singles champion won the 2007 US Open junior singles title, made the semi finals at both Junior Wimbledon and the Junior Australian Open that year plus the quarter finals at Junior Roland Garros in 2007 as well.
