The 2012 Stanford Open is one of 12 WTA tournaments in the USA each year and one of only six WTA Premier 700 category tournaments. The official name of Stanford due to title sponsorship naming rights is the Bank of the West Classic.

The 2012 tournament is being held in Stanford University at the Taube Family Tennis Center in Stanford in the USA where it has been since 1997. The surface is plexipave hard court and the centre court seating capacity is 2,445. The Stanford women’s tournament is being held for the 42nd year making after commencing in 1971 in San Francisco, making it the longest running women’s-only pro tennis tournament in the world.
This tournament runs from Saturday 7 July to Sunday 15 July. The qualifying singles event was held on Saturday through to Monday 7 to 9 July. The main draw singles event runs from Monday 9 July through to the Women’s Singles Finals day on Sunday 15 July.
The 2011 women’s singles champion was the unseeded Serena WILLIAMS who defeated No.3 seed Marion BARTOLI in the final 7-5, 6-1 to win her 38th WTA singles title and first Stanford title.
