The 1st round of the women’s singles has been completed at the Australian Open. 9 of the 32 seeded women were defeated in the very 1st round. The highest seed to lose was No.12 seed Flavia Pennetta.

The following lists show whom the seeds play in the 2nd round and who defeated the seeds in the 1st round.

In the top half of the draw the remaining seeds are:

Pictured above is Russian Maria Kirilenko playing her double handed backhand drive. The 22 year old has been ranked as high as No.18 and her best result in Grand Slam was the round of 16 here at the Australian Open in 2008.

Kirilenko claimed the biggest upset thus far in the women’s singles by defeating one of the pre-tournament favourites Maria Sharapova. Kirilenko seems set to equal her previous best performance and may showdown with another top Russian – No.2 seed Dinara Safina.
