The 2011 Australian Open women’s main draw singles 3rd round matches have been completed. The top half of the draw will play their round of 16 matches first i.e. No.1 seed Caroline WOZNIACKI’s section of the draw.

On Monday 24 January the bottom half of the draw’s four round of 16 matches will be played i.e. No.2 seed Vera ZVONAREVA’s section of the draw. Of the Top 16 seeds only half of them won through to the round of 16, with six of them being defeated in the 3rd round. There are 4 women who are looking to add to their Grand Slam singles collections by winning 4 more matches here, they are Kim Clijsters, Maria Sharapova, Svetlana Kuznetsova and Francesca Schiavone.

Only one of the round of 16 matches sees a play-off between the 2 players who lived up to their seeding i.e. No.8 Victoria AZARENKA versus No.9 LI Na. Leading in to the Australian Open two of the final 16 players won singles titles and are carrying on their form: Li Na won the Sydney International and Petra KVITOVA won the Brisbane International.

The surnames that are bolded in the list below are the players who are playing in the round. Any player whose name is italicised, has her first name removed and has her surname in lower case letters is a seeded player who was expected to win through to the Round of 16. The number in brackets that is added to a players’ name denotes they are a seeded player and what their seeding is.

  1. Hi OCA,

I’m currently comparing the draw format from this post vs. the format from the 3rd Round post. I see that the main difference is the positioning of the first/surname of the player on the right:

    First Surname
    Surname, First

I’m trying to debate between which is better. In the end, I like “First Surname” more because:

    1) The player on the left also has his/her name written that way. Your readers are already reading from left to right, so it is more intuitive this way.

    2) It eliminates the use of the comma, thus looking cleaner.

    3) If a player on the right upset a seed, his/her surname is bolded and juxtaposed alongside the italicized upset seed. I feel like it’s much easier to distinguish.

This is only my personal opinion. Hopefully other readers contribute to give you an idea of what they like.
