Australian Open 2011 Women’s Semi Finals

The 2011 Australian Open women’s quarter final main draw singles matches are now complete. Of the 4 seeds that were seeded to win through to the semi finals three of them have lived up to expectations. The semi finals provide the opportunity to play-off for a spot in the 2011 Australian Open Women’s Singles Final.

No.1 seed Caroline Wozniacki, No.2 Vera Zvonareva, No.3 Kim Clijsters and No.9 Li Na are all fighting fit and set to fight it out in Melbourne tomorrow. All four semi finalists are right handers who use a double handed backhand. All four players have played in at least one Grand Slam singles semi final within the past 12 months. Clijsters is going for her second Grand Slam singles title in a row and her semi final match against Zvonareva is a rematch of that 2010 US Open final.

Here we take a quick look at some other information and statistics about the 4 semi finalists:

Wozniacki – 20-year-old from Denmark. Her career best ranking is her current position at World No.1 which she first achieved on October 11 2010. Her best Grand Slam results are being a runner-up at the 2009 US Open and making the past 2 Grand Slam semi finals, here at the Australian Open and at the 2010 US Open.

To get to the semi finals Wozniacki won her first four matches in straight sets. In the quarter final match she lost the first set to 2010 Roland Garros champion Francesca Schiavone before coming back to win in 3 sets. Wozniacki is the tallest of the semi finalists at 1.77m and has conceded 34 games in 5 matches.

Zvonareva – 26-year-old from Russia. Her career best ranking is No.2 which she first achieved on October 25 2010. Her best Grand Slam results have been achieved or equalled in her past 3 Grand Slam tournaments. The 1.72m Zvonareva was a runner-up in the past two Grand Slam tournaments: Wimbledon and the US Open in 2010. To get to the semi finals Zvonareva has lost just one set and conceded 33 games in 5 matches.

Zvonareva is pictured above playing a backhand return of serve at the 2011 Hong Kong Tennis Classic. In fact 3 of the 4 semi finalists all used Hong Kong as part of their preparation for the Australian Open!

  1. The Clijsters vs Zvonareva semi is perhaps the more open. Most people regarded the former as the pre-tournament favourite, but if Clijsters plays as she did yesterday, then Zvonareva will be a shoe-in for the final.
