Roland Garros 2010 Last 16 Men

The 2010 Roland Garros men’s main draw singles 3rd round matches are scheduled to be completed today. This post will be throughout the day’s play as the matches are completed. The schedule of play for today has the 8 matches from the bottom half of the draw set to be played plus the remainder of the Youzhny/Troicki match will resume with No.11 seed Mikhail Youzhny costing in on victory.

Play will begin at 11am local time in Paris, France on both days. One qualifier is through to the round of 16 – Teimuraz Gabashvili from Russia. The 25 year old had only won 3 main draw singles matches in Grand Slam events in his entire career prior to this event. Gabashvili has won 6 matches in a row thus far, 3 qualifying matches and 3 main draw singles matches. The 1.88m current World No.114 will improve at least 40 places in the world rankings even if he does not progress any further at Roland Garros.

Pictured above is 24 year old Tomas Berdych just after making contact with the ball with his double handed backhand drive during the 2009 Davis Cup final. The 1.96m Berdych has equalled his best result at Roland Garros by making the round of 16 as he did in 2006.

The Czech is looking to make his 2nd Grand Slam quarter final (he made the 2007 Wimbledon quarter finals), after losing in the round of 16 a total of 9 times. Berdych has made the round of 16 in all 4 Grand Slams singles events. He takes on World No.4 Andy Murray this Sunday, they have beaten each other once each in the past. Berdych won their last match all the way back in 2006.

In the top half of the draw the best ever performances by these remaining players at Roland Garros are: Federer winner 2009, Soderling runner-up 2009, Murray quarter finalist 2009, whilst Tsonga, Cilic, Youzhny and Berdych have all equalled their best result by making the round of 16 and Wawrinka whose round of 16 result is his best to date.

In the bottom half of the draw best ever performances by these remaining players at Roland Garros are: Nadal winner 2005-2008, Djokovic semi finalist 2007 & 2008, Almagro quarter finalist 2008, whilst Ginepri and Verdasco have equalled their best result by making the round of 16. Ginepri made the round of 16 in 2008 whilst Verdasco is in the round of 16 for the 4th year in a row. Melzer whose round of 16 result is his best to date in any Grand Slam and likewise for Bellucci whose best in any Grand Slam was making the 2nd round.
