The 2010 Roland Garros women’s main draw singles 3rd round matches are scheduled to be completed today. This post will be throughout the day’s play as the matches are completed. The schedule of play for today has the 8 matches from the top half of the draw set to be played plus the remainder of the Rezai/Petrova match will resume from 7 games all in the final set.

Play will begin at 11am local time in Paris, France on both days. One qualifier is through to the round of 16 – Chanelle Scheepers from South Africa. The 26 year old is playing in only her 3rd Grand Slam singles event and will improve at least 50 places in the world rankings, which would move her inside the top 100 for the 1st time. Scheepers is currently No.131 and her previous highest ranking is No.127. Even if she does not progress any further at Roland Garros she will jump up to No.80.

Pictured above is 28 year old Flavia Pennetta as she is just about to make contact with the ball for this forehand drive. The 1.72m Pennetta has equalled her best result at Roland Garros by making the round of 16 as she did in 2008. The Italian is looking to make her 3rd Grand Slam quarter final (she made the US Open quarters in 2008 and 2009), when she takes on World No.3 Caroline Wozniacki this Sunday. Despite being ranked so high, the is the 1st time Wozniacki has progressed beyond the 3rd round at Roland Garros.

In the bottom half of the draw the best ever performances at Roland Garros by these remaining players are: V.Williams – runner-up in 2002, Dementieva – runner-up in 2004, Petrova – semi finalist in 2003 & 2005, Schiavone – quarter finalist in 2001 and Kirilenko – this year is her 1st round of 16 result.

In the top half of the draw the best ever performances at Roland Garros by the remaining players are: S.Williams won in 2002, Jankovic – semi finalist in 2007 & 2008, Stosur – semi final 2009, Hantuchova – this is her 3rd time to the rtound of 16 (also in 2002 & 2006) and for Shvedova and Groth they have already achieved their best result by making the round of 16.
