The 2010 Roland Garros men’s main draw singles 2nd round matches are almost complete. The schedule of play is still a bit behind after the rain delays over the past 2 days, which means today we will be treated to seeing a larger than usual number of the top seeds in action. The last few 2nd round matches will be played as well as the 3rd round matches for the top half of the draw.

The 3rd round is the round in which the seeded players play off against each other for the 1st time in the tournament. It will be played today and tomorrow (Friday 28 May and Saturday 29 May), after which only  16 men will remain in the draw. Play will begin at 11am local time in Paris, France on both days. After the men’s 3rd round singles draw that is listed below you can find the full list of scores for the 2nd round matches.

No wild wild cards advanced past the 2 rounds and just 2 qualifiers of the initial 16 qualifiers remain, Julian Reister and Teimuraz Gabashvili. The French crowd has just 1 man left to support as they hope for the 1st home singles champion since Yannick Noah in 1983. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is the No.8 seed whose best result at Roland Garros was making the round of 16 in 2009. Tsonga made the 2008 Australian Open men’s singles final and would love to achieve a personal best in his home town.

Of the 32 seeds only 8 seeds did not make it through to the 3rd round which means there are 8 of the 16 3rd round matches in which 2 seeds are playing against each other. This means there will be many great match ups to watch over the next 2 days. All of the Top 10 seeds have survived the 1st to rounds, which means at least one of them will be upset in the 3rd round. Who will it be?

Pictured above is 30 year old Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero positioned to play his double handed backhand drive. The former World No.1 is poised to achieve his best result at Roland Garros since winning the singles title in 2003. Ferrero made the semi finals in 2000 & in 2001, was the runner-up in 2002 before he took the crown in 2003.

Ferrero has made the steady climb from outside the Top 100 this time last year to being one of the top 16 seeds this year. Ferrero’s comeback began with his Quarter Final result at Wimbledon in 2009. Ferrero has a well rounded record in all of the 4 Grand Slams, he was also the runner-up at the 2003 US Open and a semi finalist at the 2004 Australian Open. Next up he plays the unseeded American Robby Ginepri for a spot in the round of 16.
