The 2010 Roland Garros men’s main draw singles round of 16 matches are scheduled to be completed today. This post will be updated throughout the day’s play as the 4 matches from the bottom half of the draw finish.

Play will begin at 11am local time in Paris, France with the men’s matches scheduled to play as the 1st and 3rd matches on court for the day on both of the main stadiums. On Court Philippe Chartrier the unseeded Robby Ginepri plays No.3 seed Novak Djokovic then Serena Williams plays Shahar Peer and following that No.2 seed Rafael Nadal plays Thomaz Bellucci.

On Court Suzanne Lenglen No.22 seed Jurgen Melzer plays qualifier Teimuraz Gabshvili then Samantha Stosur plays Justine Henin and following that at 1pm No.7 seed Fernando Verdasco plays Nicolas Almagro to round out the men’s round of 16 matches.

Pictured above is 29 year old Jurgen Melzer right at the contact point for this backhand volley. The 1.83m Austrian Slovakian has already achieved his career best Grand Slam singles result by making the round of 16. Melzer is 1 of 4 left handers still in contention to win the title. The current World No.27 achieved his career high ranking last week at No.26 and has a very good chance to move into the Top 20 for the 1st time after Roland Garros.

Melzer will be the favourite to win against the lowest ranked player left in the draw – World No.114 Gabashvili. Melzer is continuing on his good clay court form and will be looking to make his 2nd consecutive quarter final.

At the Madrid Masters 1000 tournament right before this event, Melzer defeated Verdasco in straight sets before losing to Nicolas Almagro. Almagro pushed Nadal in Madrid more than anybody else did. Today Almagro will also be trying to go through to the quarter finals for a possible rematch with Nadal.
