The 2010 Roland Garros men’s quarter finals begin today and will be played over 2 days. The top half of the draw will be played 1st and tomorrow the remaining 2 quarter final matches i.e bottom half of the draw are scheduled to be played.
The 2010 Roland Garros men’s singles quarter finals draw is:
- (1) Roger Federer v. (5) Robin Soderling
- (15) Tomas Berdych v. (11) Mikhail Youzhny
- (22) Jurgen Melzer versus (3) Novak Djokovic
- (19) Nicolas Almagro versus (2) Rafael Nadal
Play will begin at 2pm local time in Paris, France with the men’s matches scheduled to play as the 2nd match on court for the day on both of the main stadiums. On Court Philippe Chartrier Caroline Wozniacki plays Francesca Schiavone then No.1 seed Roger Federer takes on No.5 seed Robin Soderling in a rematch of what was the 2009 Roland Garros Men’s Singles Final.
Soderling has improved immensely since last year’s final and has achieved a number of personal bests as well as gained far more experience in big matches since being a runner-up in Roland Garros. The 1.93m Soderling is pictured above JUST after making contact with the ball with this forehand drive. The 25 year old Swede lost his last 3 matches that he played against Federer in 2009 in the 3 Grand Slams. In the last match Soderling played against Federer he won 6-7 (6-8), 7-6 (7-1), 6-2 in the Abu Dhabi tournament in January this year.
The pressure will be on Federer as he will be expected to win and he will know that last time they met Soderling beat him. The taller and younger Soderling will be hungry to go one better at Roland Garros and for him, the timing is perfect. He is currently ranked a career high No.7 has beaten Rafael Nadal the past 3 times they have played, including the last time at Abu Dhabi this year. Soderling said in his interview after beating Nadal that he kept telling himself that he had to BELIEVE. If he does the same today he could cause the biggest upset in Paris two years in a row. Prediction: Soderling.
On Court Suzanne Lenglen Elena Dementieva plays Nadia Petrova then No.11 seed Mikhail Youzhny takes on No.15 seed Tomas Berdych for a spot in the semi finals against the winner of the Soderling – Federer match. The 27 year old Youzhny leads Berdych 6-4 in their head to head battles. The last meeting was in Tokyo, Japan last year, also in a quarter final which the 1.83m Youzhny won in straight sets.
The Russian has achieved his best result at Roland Garros by making the quarter finals. Youzhny has the edge over Berdych in Grand Slam singles quarter finals experience and results. This is his 3rd quarter final, he reached this stage at the 2008 Australian Open and won through to the semi finals of the 2006 US Open. Youzhny plays a very entertaining style of game in which he plays with great variety and from all different parts of the court.
The 1.96m Berdych has also achieved his best result at Roland Garros this year and is playing his 2nd Grand Slam quarter final. The Czech made the 2007 Wimbledon quarter finals in his previous best showing. The 24 year old has the power and big serve that could give him the edge by allowing him to end the points easier and win his service games with greater ease. The younger of the two players will have to maintain his nerve and hope his unforced error tally from his forehand ground strokes does not let him down. Prediction: Berdych.
