The 2010 Roland Garros men’s main draw singles matches will begin this Sunday 23 May at 11am local time in Paris, France. There are 128 main draw spots divided up between 16 Qualifiers (Q), 8 Wild Cards (WC), 1 Lucky Loser (LL) and 103 Direct Acceptances. Roland Garros which is known as the French Open outside of Europe is the 2nd Grand Slam tournament of the year and the only one held on clay courts.

Pictured above is 29 year old Fernando Gonzalez about to make contact with the ball with this single handed slice backhand. The 1.83m Gonzalez from Chile made it to the semi finals at Roland Garros last year before losing to Robin Soderling 6-3, 7-5, 5-7, 4-6, 6-4 in 3 hours and 28 minutes.

Soderling went up 2 sets to love and then was down 4-1 in the final set before a fighting surge of 5 games on end took the 2007 Australian Open singles runner-up from making his 2nd Grand Slam singles final to huge disappointment. The former World No.5 has made the quarter finals or better of all 4 Grand Slam singles events in his career.

Gonzalez has recently teamed up with a new coach in Darren Cahill. Gonzalez and Cahill will be hoping that another step forward is taken this year. In 2008 Gonzalez made the quarter finals. In 2009 he made the semi finals. What will he achieve this year?

The seeded players do not receive a BYE in the 1st round of a Grand Slam event. To win the title a player must win 7 best of 5 set matches in a row. Those players seeded to meet in the quarter finals have their names bolded below. For further details about the men’s event you can visit -> Roland Garros Men’s Schedule of Play and Roland Garros 2010 Men’s Singles.

Being seeded means that you the earliest round in the event that you can meet another seeded player is 3rd round in which only 32 players remain. The players name that is bolded is OCA’s prediction of who will win each match.

The draw for the seeded players if they all win through to the 3rd round is:

  • (1) Roger Federer versus (27) Feliciano Lopez
