The biggest upsets on Day 1 were Gisela Dulko defeating last years Roland Garros quarter finalist and No.10 seed Victoria Azarenka quite comfortably 6-1 6-2 and 2010 Rome Singles Champion No.20 seed Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez being defeated by Akgul Amanmuradova 6-2 6-4.

The most impressive victory on Day 1 delighted the French fans on Court Philippe Chartrier. No.15 seed Aravane Rezai who defeated Venus Williams in straight sets in the Madrid singles final last week, played unstoppable tennis. Rezai is a serious contender for the title if she can consistently perform at the level she maintained in the 1st round.

Pictured above is 25 year old Argentine Gisela Dulko preparing to play her double handed backhand ground stroke. The 1.70m Dulko achieved her highest career singles ranking of No.25 in 2005. Now 5 years later she appears to be in the form that could mover her into the Top 20 for the 1st time.

Dulko’s best results in a Grand Slam singles event is making the round of 16, which she achieved at the 2009 US Open and Roland Garros in 2006. Dulko made the round of 16 of all 4 Grand Slams in the junior events and achieved a career high Junior ITF World ranking of No.5.

Dulko will be looking for her 1st quarter final in a Grand Slam singles event, especially after the seed in her section is out (Martinez Sanchez) and her next opponent is a qualifier.
