The 2010 Roland Garros women’s main draw singles matches will begin this Sunday 23 May at 11am local time in Paris, France. There are 128 main draw spots divided up between 12 Qualifiers (Q), 8 Wild Cards (WC) and 108 Direct Acceptances. Roland Garros which is known as the French Open outside of Europe is the 2nd Grand Slam tournament of the year and the only one held on clay courts.

Pictured above is 23 year old Russian Maria Sharapova concentrating on watching the contact point between the ball and her racquet with this forehand volley. The 1.88m Sharapova made the quarter finals at Roland Garros last year and her best result here was making the semi finals in 2007.

The former World No.1 has won 3 Grand Slam singles titles, the 2004 Wimbledon championship, the 2006 US Open and the 2008 Australian Open. Following that pattern, Sharapova was due to win at Roland Garros in 2010 to complete her Grand Slam singles set. Can she do it this year?

The seeded players do not receive a BYE in the 1st round of a Grand Slam event. To win the title a player must win 7 best of 3 set matches in a row. Those players seeded to meet in the quarter finals have their names bolded below. For further details about the women’s event you can visit -> Roland Garros Women’s Schedule of Play and Roland Garros 2010 Women’s Singles.

Being seeded means that you the earliest round in the event that you can meet another seeded player is 3rd round in which only 32 players remain. The players name that is bolded is OCA’s prediction of who will win each match.
