Roland Garros 2011 Men’s Singles Draw

The 2011 Roland Garros men’s main draw singles matches will begin on Sunday 22 May at 11am local time in Paris, France. There are 128 main draw spots divided up between 16 Qualifiers (Q), 8 Wild Cards (WC) and 104 Direct Acceptances.

The seeded players do not receive a BYE in the 1st round of a Grand Slam event. To win the title a player must win 7 best of 5 set matches in a row. Being seeded means that you the earliest round in the event that you can meet another seeded player is 3rd round in which only 32 players remain. Roland Garros was first held in 1891 and became open to players from all around the world to compete in from 1925.

The Seeds: In a 128-player sized draw there are 32 seeded players. This means that all of the 32 seeds are separated in the draw so they play two rounds against lower ranked opponents who are unseeded, before they can meet another seed in the 3rd round.

The Wild Cards: The wild cards have been awarded to 6 French men Arnaud CLEMENT, Edouard ROGER-VASSELIN, Guillaume RUFIN, Vincent MILLOT, Benoit PAIRE and Maxime TEIXEIRA plus reciprocal wild cards Tim SMYCZEK (USA) and Bernard TOMIC (Australia).

The Qualifiers: The 128-player qualifying tournament begins on Tuesday 17 May and runs through to Friday 20 May. The draw will take place today at 11:30am in Paris. The seeding for Roland Garros is allocated according to the latest ATP rankings before the draw is made. These rankings were released on Monday 16 May therefore the 2011 Roland Garros men’s singles seeds are:

If any of the seeded players withdraw from Roland Garros during the next week OCA will update the seeded players list above straight away. If any seed withdraws then World No.33 Guillermo Garcia-Lopez will move into the seedings, the next player in line to be promoted to a seed is No.34 Sergiy Stakhovsky and then No.35 Kevin Anderson.

Update: No.11 seed Andy Roddick has withdrawn with a right shoulder injury. Therefore World No.33 Guillermo Garcia-Lopez becomes a seeded player. No.22 seed David Nalbandian withdrew so Sergiy Stakhovsky becomes a seed. No.31 seed Tommy Robredo withdrew so Kevin Anderson is promoted into the seedings.

Update: Another two players who were amongst the original 104 direct acceptances have withdrawn due to injury as well: former World No.1 and 2003 Roland Garros singles champion Juan Carlos Ferrero and rising star Richard Berankis, which means 3 spots in the main draw will be awarded to lucky losers.

And, Djokovic will be no1 long time in future.

  2. Eventhough i would like to see Rafa win his 6th, i am somewhat skeptical given Djokovic incredible run so far this yeat. He seems unbeatable, it remains to be seen. VAMOS RAFA!!
