Roland Garros 2011 Women’s Singles Draw

The 2011 Roland Garros women’s main draw singles matches will begin on Sunday 22 May at 11am local time in Paris, France. There are 128 main draw spots divided up between 12 Qualifiers (Q), 8 Wild Cards (WC) and 108 Direct Acceptances.

The seeded players do not receive a BYE in the 1st round of a Grand Slam event. To win the title a player must win seven best of 3 set matches in a row. Being seeded means that you the earliest round in the event that you can meet another seeded player is 3rd round in which only 32 players remain. Roland Garros was first held in 1891 and became open to players from all around the world to compete in from 1925.

The Seeds: In a 128-player sized draw there are 32 seeded players. This means that all of the 32 seeds are separated in the draw so that play 2 rounds against lower ranked opponents who are unseeded, before they can meet another seed in the 3rd round.

The Wild Cards: The wild cards have been awarded to 6 French women Olivia SANCHEZ, Stephanie FORETZ GACON, Iryna BREMOND, Pauline PARMENTIER, Caroline GARCIA and Kristina MLADENOVIC plus Grand Slam reciprocal wild cards Irina FALCONI (USA) and Casey DELLACQUA (Australia).

The Qualifiers: The 128-player qualifying tournament begins on Tuesday 17 May and runs through to Friday 20 May. The draw will take place today at 11:30am in Paris. These rankings were released on Monday 16 May therefore the 2011 Roland Garros women’s singles seeds are:

  • Seeds 1-8: 1-Caroline Wozniacki, 2-Kim Clijsters, 3-Vera Zvonareva, 4-Victoria Azarenka, 5-Francesca Schiavone, 6-Li Na, 7-Maria Sharapova, 8-Samantha Stosur
  • Seeds 9-16: 9-Petra Kvitova, 10-Jelena Jankovic, 11-Marion Bartoli, 12-Agnieszka Radwanska, 13-Svetlana Kuznetsova, 14-Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, 15-Andrea Petkovic, 16-Kaia Kanepi
  • Seeds 17-24: 17-Julia Goerges, 18-Flavia Pennetta, 19-Shahar Peer, 20-Ana Ivanovic, 21-Yanina Wickmayer, 22-Dominika Cibulkova, 23-Alisa Kleybanova, 24-Jarmila Gajdosova
  • Seeds 25-32: 25-Maria Kirilenko, 26-Nadia Petrova, 27-Alexandra Dulgheru, 28-Daniela Hantuchova, 29-Peng Shuai, 30-Roberta Vinci, 31-Klara Zakopalova, 32-Tsvetana Pironkova

If any of the seeded players withdraw from Roland Garros during the next week OnCourt Advantage will update the seeded players list above straight away. If any seed withdraws then World No.35 Ekaterina Makarova will move into the seedings and the next player in line to be promoted to a seed is No.36 Bethanie Mattek-Sands. Both Serena and Venus Williams would have been seeded but have not yet recovered from long term injuries.

Update: No.23 seed Alisa Kleybanova has withdrawn and was replaced by lucky loser Anastasia Pivovarova.

OnCourt Advantage will be adding the names into the 3rd round match ups for seeds and the full singles draw as it occurs from 10am on Friday 20 May right below this. The men’s draw will follow the women’s draw. OnCourt Advantage will add the names of the 12 qualifiers into the full draw below once they are known. At 5pm Paris time on Saturday 21 May these qualifiers will be allocated a spot in the 1st round and entered in the full below draw straight away.
