Roland Garros 2012 Women’s Singles Draw

The 2012 Roland Garros women’s main draw singles matches will begin on Sunday 27 May at 11am local time in Paris, France. In this post a number of interesting facts about the men’s singles main draw will be provided, including when the draw is made, how the draw works, whom all the different types of participants are and who the seeds are.

The official draw is being held on Friday 20 May at 11:30am. There are 128 players in the draw divided up between 12 Qualifiers (Q), 8 Wild Cards (WC) and 108 Direct Acceptances. The cut-off date for entry is 9 April 2012.

2010 Roland Garros singles champion Francesca SCHIAVONE defeated Samantha Stosur in the final after losing to Stosur in the 1st round in 2009. Li Na defeated Schiavone in the final in 2011 after losing to Schiavone in 2010. The 31-year-old Italian is pictured above propelling her racquet to the contact point with the ball at Roland Garros in 2011. The seven players who Li Na defeated in 2011 may like their chances in 2012 including Victoria Azarenka, Maria Sharapova and Petra Kvitova!

The Seeds:  The seeded players do not receive a BYE in the 1st round of a Grand Slam event. The Wild Cards: The wild cards will be selected closer to the tournament by the French Tennis Federation, who usually select six French players. The other two wild cards go to an American and an Australian due to a reciprocal wild card exchange arrangement between the US Open, Australian Open and Roland Garros. The Qualifiers: The 96-player qualifying tournament begins on Tuesday 22 May and runs through to Friday 25 May.
