Roland Garros 2013 Order of Play: Day 9

Francesca Schiavone

The 2013 Roland Garros singles events have four women’s and four men’s singles matches scheduled to be played here in Paris on Monday 3 June. Below OnCourt Advantage lists the order of play for the ninth day of main draw singles matches to make it easier for you to know who plays whom, when and on which court.

In the Men’s Singles (Simple Messieurs) three of the four matches showcase the expected seeded fourth round match ups with only No.29 seed Mikhail Youzhny winning through from outside the Top 16 seeds.

In the Women’s Singles (Simple Dames) six of the eight players in action are from outside the Top 10 with two unseeded American players performing particularly well to set new personal bests at Roland Garros. The 28-year-old Bethanie Mattek-Sands upset 2011 Roland Garros champion and No.6 seed Li Na in straight sets, whilst the 23-year-old Jamie Hampton defeated 2011 Wimbledon champion and No.7 seed Petra Kvitova in straight sets to set four American women in the final 16 for the first time in a Grand Slam since 2004.

The top half of the men’s draw is scheduled to be played featuring both of the 2012 finalists No.1 seed Novak Djokovic who is chasing a career Grand Slam at this event and 7-time Roland Garros champion No.3 seed Rafael Nadal in back-to-back action on centre court.

The now 27-year-old Rafa will hope to celebrate his birthday today with a victory to close in on the potential block buster 35th career meeting against Nole. Djokovic won their most recent clay court encounter in straight sets in the final of Monte Carlo this clay court season.

For the women it is the bottom half of the draw is being played featuring with No.2 seed Maria Sharapova who completed her career Grand Slam at Roland Garros last year and 2013 Australian Open champion No.3 seed Victoria Azarenka both fighting it out for the chance to play against a player outside the Top 10 in the quarter finals for a semi final berth.

The 26-year-old Sharapova has lost just 15 games thus far whereas 23-year-old Azarenka dropped 12 games in the first two rounds then lost the first set in her last match before fighting back to win her 10th straight Grand Slam match this year. Azarenka has won six of their past nine matches and leads 7-5 overall, yet Sharapova has won their only two clay court encounters.

The lower ranked players will be out to make the most of their tremendous form to date and upset the highly successful Grand Slam performers in Nadal, Djokovic, Sharapova and Azarenka. Pictured above is Francesca Schiavone, the 2010 Roland Garros champion has been especially impressive in her bid to play in her third French Open final in four years. Rising star Sloane Stephens who upset Serena Williams to win through to this year’s Australian Open semi finals has the firepower to continue her hot Grand Slam run in 2013.

The letters in brackets after each player’s name is the prefix for the country that player represents. The italicised words in brackets after the English sentence are the French equivalent.
