World No.1 Rafael Nadal was playing in his 3rd straight semi final at the US Open against No.12 seed Mikhail Youzhny who was playing in 2nd US Open semi final. At The Open the second last day of the tournament is called Super Saturday because it is the only Grand Slam tournament that plays both the men’s semi finals and the women’s singles final on the same day.

The 24 year old Nadal from Spain won 6-2 6-3 6-4 in 2 hours and 13 minutes to achieve his career best result at the US Open by making his first Men’s Singles Final. The 1.85m Nadal is achieving new heights as he is in the picture above just prior to making contact with the ball for this serve during his night match on September 7 on Tuesday. Nadal will be trying to win his 3rd consecutive Grand Slam singles title this year to make 9 in total and complete his set of Grand Slam titles.

The left handed Nadal who plays against the winner of No.2 seed Roger Federer and No.3 seed Novak Djokovic who are battling it out for the 4th straight year at the US Open. Nadal will be playing against a right hander in the Men’s Singles Final which is scheduled to begin at 4pm New York time on Sunday 12 September.

The Nadal and Youzhny match began at 12:25pm on the Arthur Ashe Stadium and was the first match of the day. The 28 year old Youzhny of Russia was looking to repeat his victory over Nadal at the US Open in 2006 to make his first Grand Slam singles final. Nadal was too good for the 1.83m Youzhny as he continued his run of what is now 6 straight matches where he has won in straight sets. Nadal improved to 8-4 against Youzhny and looks to have improved his fitness as well looking leaner, lighter and subsequently even faster than he has been before.

Nadal served first with players trading service game holds through to 2-1 before Nadal converted the first break point of the match at 30-40 to break away from Youzhny by 3 games to 1. Youzhny had 1 break point opportunity in the next game before Nadal won 3 straight points. Both players held serve through to 5-2. Nadal brought up triple set point and on his second set point Nadal hit a forehand passing shot winner past Youzhny’s backhand volley by hitting a short cross court angle.

Nadal served 1st again in the 2nd set and the players traded service game holds through to 4-3 before Nadal brought up triple break point which he converted with his second chance. In what was an overall pattern for the match Nadal got their first, controlled the points and converted his chances serving out the 2nd set.

Youzhny served first in the 3rd set in what was the best tennis of the match…
