The 2011 US Open men’s main draw singles has just 24 players remaining. The 1st round began with 128 players in action, 32 of them were seeded players, 16 were Qualifiers (Q) and 8 were Wild Cards (WC). The bottom half of the draw will play their 3rd round matches today i.e. No.2 seed Rafael NADAL and No.4 seed Andy MURRAY’s section of the draw.
Of the 16 qualifiers in the 1st round five of them won through to the 2nd round – Sergei BUBKA from the Ukraine, Marsel ILHAN of Turkey, Malek JAZIRI from Tunisia, Vasek POSPISIL from Canada and Jean-Rene LISNARD of Monaco. After No.6 seed Robin Soderling withdrew with a right wrist injury Lucky Loser Rogerio DUTRA DA SILVA replaced him and won through to the 2nd round. In the 2nd round all of these six players were eliminated however two wild cards won through to the 3rd round American Donald YOUNG and Frenchman Julien BENNETEAU. The only other wild cards to win a match were Americans Robby GINEPRI and Jack SOCK who were both defeated in the 2nd round.

Of the Top 16 seeds eight of them have already been defeated form the highest seed down – No.7 Monfils, No.9 Berdych, No.10 Almagro, No.13 Gasquet, No.14 Wawrinka, No.15 Troicki and No.16 Youzhny. Amongst the undefeated players there are four former US Open singles champions (NADAL, DEL POTRO, FEDERER and RODDICK and a further two Grand Slam singles champions (DJOKOVIC and FERRERO) still in contention to be the 2011 US Open champion. Djokovic and Ferrero have both been runner-up at the US Open in the past.
In the top half of the draw just one of the round of 16 matches lived up to its seeding i.e. No.11 TSONGA versus No.8 FISH. Tsonga, Fish and Djokovic are the only players who have not lost a set thus far with World No.1 dropping the least games to date at only 12 games. In the bottom half of the draw defending US Open singles champion Rafael NADAL, 2009 US Open singles champion DEL POTRO, No.24 CHELA and No.26 MAYER are the only players who have yet to lose a set.
Pictured above is No.4 seed Andy MURRAY who lost in the 3rd round of the 2010 US Open well after making contact with the ball for this double-handed backhand. The three-time runner-up in Grand Slam singles finals came back from 2-sets-to-love down against the unseeded Robin Haase in his last match. The 24-year-old Murray was the runner-up in the 2008 US Open and would be expecting himself to make it through to at least the semi finals with No.12 seed Simon the highest seed he could meet on his way.
The 1.9m Murray next plays No.25 seed Feliciano Lopez who he has beaten all five times in the past and only lost one set to the left-handed Spaniard previously. On the day though it is always all about which player can perform at a higher level than his opponent and especially on the crucial points that can swing the match either way. After his 5-set scare Murray may snap back into the form that he showed in winning the Cincinnati Open Masters 1000 title leading into the US Open.
The surnames that are bolded in the list below are the players who are playing in this round. The number in brackets that is added to a players’ name denotes they are a seeded player and what their seeding is. Only Nadal, Djokovic and Federer remain of the 2010 US Open quarter finalists.
