US Open 2011 Women’s Singles Draw

The 2011 US Open women’s main draw singles matches will begin on Monday 29 August at 11am local time in New York in the USA despite the threat of Hurricane Irene. The full singles draw including whom the 16 qualifiers play is NOW listed below. There are 128 main draw spots divided up between 16 Qualifiers (Q), 8 Wild Cards (WC) and 104 Direct Acceptances.

The 104 direct acceptances are decided according to who the Top 104 ranked players in the world that are fit and able to compete at US Open this year on 4 August 2011. If any direct acceptances withdraw after the first round of qualifying is completed then those spots are awarded to lucky losers. Pictured above is current World No.2 Vera ZVONAREVA about to strike her famous forehand ground stroke during her quarter final victory over 2011 Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova in the 2011 Australian Open quarter finals. The 1.72m Zvonareva reached her second consecutive Grand Slam singles final when she was the runner-up in the 2010 US Open singles final to Kim Clijsters.

The 26-year-old Zvonareva first achieved her career-high ranking of No.2 on 25 October 2010. The Russian turns 27 during this year’s Open and would love nothing more than to win her first Grand Slam singles title to celebrate. Kim Clijsters who has won the US Open the past two years running is out of this year’s event due to a stomach injury opening up a great opportunity for players like Wozniacki, Zvonareva and Azarenka this year.

The Seeds:

The seeds were selected according to the latest WTA computer rankings prior to the draw being made. This year the seedings were based on the Monday 22 August rankings. Unlike in many other tournaments the seeded players do NOT receive a BYE in the 1st round. To win the title a player must win 7 best-of-3 set matches in a row.

In a 128-player sized draw there are 32 seeded players. This means that all of the 32 seeds are separated in the draw so that play two rounds against lower ranked opponents who are unseeded, before they can meet another seed in the 3rd round.

The Wild Cards:

The wild cards were awarded at the discretion of the United States Tennis Association (USTA) and in a strong show of support to Americans 6 wild cards went to-> Jamie HAMPTON, Sloane STEPHENS, Alison RISKE, Jill CRAYBAS, Madison KEYS and Lauren DAVIS. The other 2 wild cards were unable to be awarded to Americans because the USTA holds a 3-way reciprocal arrangement with the Australian Open and Roland Garros. The Australians awarded a wild card to Casey DELLACQUA and the French chose Aravane REZAI.

The Qualifiers:

The 128-player qualifying tournament began on Tuesday 23 August and ran through to Friday 26 August. The 16 qualifiers who all won 3 consecutive matches to qualify were-> Ekaterina BYCHKOVA, Vitalia DIATCHENKO, Silvia SOLER-ESPINOSA, Michaella KRAJICEK, Reka-Luca JANI, Marina ERAKOVIC, Galina VOSKOBOEVA, Urszula RADWANSKA, Romina OPRANDI, Noppawan LERTCHEEWAKARN, Alexandra PANOVA, Aleksandra WOZNIAKCHAN Yung-Jan, Karin KNAPP, Laura ROBSON and Stephanie FORETZ GACON.

Marina Erakovic of New Zealand and Aleksandra Wozniak of Canada have now qualified for three Grand Slam singles events in a row. Vitalia Diatchenko also qualified for her second Grand Slam in a row after winning through to the main draw at Wimbledon this year.
