US Open 2011 Women’s Singles Final

In the 2011 US Open Women’s Singles Final there was a great upset by No.9 seed Samantha STOSUR to win her first Grand Slam singles title in defeating former World No.1 and 13-time Grand Slam singles champion Serena Williams 6-2 6-3 in 1 hour and 13 minutes.

Congratulations to the 2011 US Open champion Samantha STOSUR (pictured above) for defeating Serena Williams despite the huge contrast in experience and past achievements. Serena was playing in her 17th Grand Slam singles final whereas Stosur was playing in her 2nd Grand Slam singles final and first at the US Open.

The 1.72m Stosur lost the most recent match they played and just prior to the US Open in straight sets. The Australian hit 20 winners compared to Serena’s 19 in the final. The big difference was that Stosur remained poised and focused, which allowed her to record a far greater conversion rate than Serena on break point opportunities.

Stosur won 5 of her 9 break point opportunities, whereas Serena converted 1 out of 5. In fact, Serena had double break point to move a head 3 games to 1 in the 2nd set, with what seemed a big momentum shift in her favour but missed these break point opportunities. From that point onwards Stosur won 5 of the next 6 games to win the championship.
