The Seeds: The seeded players do not receive a BYE in the 1st round of a Grand Slam event. To win the title any player must win seven main draw best of 3-set matches in a row. The seeds are selected solely according to the latest WTA rankings before the draw is made i.e. as of 20 August 2012.
All of the 32 seeds are placed in preselected positions in the 128-player draw to guarantee that each of the seeds cannot meet another seed until the 3rd round. Therefore, the seeded players have the advantage of only playing against players in their first two rounds that are lower ranked players and outside of the highest 32 ranked players in the draw.
The Wild Cards: The eight wild cards were announced on 16 August and went to six Americans and the two reciprocal wild cards with Roland Garros (French woman Kristina MLADENOVIC) and the Australian Open (Australian Olivia ROGOWSKA). The Americans are: Melanie OUDIN, Bethanie MATTEK-SANDS, Victoria DUVAL, Julia COHEN, Mallory BURDETTE and Nicole GIBBS.
The Qualifiers: The 96-player qualifying tournament began on Tuesday 21 August and runs through to Friday 24 August. The 12 players win their 3rd round of qualifying and therefore qualify for the main draw.
