Wimbledon is seen as the most traditional tennis tournament of all and players see this as one of the biggest tournaments in the world. So what’s in store for this year’s Championships?
Wimbledon 2013 is due to be held between June 24th and July 7th. Main competitions taking place within the two week tournament are as follows; men’s singles, women’s singles, women’s doubles, men’s doubles and mixed doubles. 128 players play in both the men’s and women’s championships and the highest ranked players in the world qualify automatically.
Favourites for this year in the men’s championship are as follows: Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer.
Novak Djokovic is the current favourite with the bookmakers as he is currently number one in the world and won the first grand slam of 2013 at the Australian Open; he also won Wimbledon in 2011. Andy Murray is the crowd’s favourite and performs consistently highly in the tournament reaching the final last year, although he has recently pulled out of the French Open due to injury and therefore might not be at his best.
Rafael Nadal has just returned from injury but has managed to perform very well since; he is currently the form player and has won Wimbledon in 2008 and 2010. Whilst Roger Federer may not be the player he once was you can never rule him out as he has won the Wimbledon title a record seven times, including last year!
The women’s championship also has four main favourites: Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova, Victoria Azarenka and Petra Kvitova. Serena Williams is the current world number one and has won the title five times before, although Sharapova is currently second in the world and won Wimbledon in 2004.
Azarenka is third in the world and is the form player after winning the Australian open in early 2011, yet whilst Kvitova is as low as 7th in the world currently, she won the title in 2011 which means you can’t rule her out as a potential contender either.
