The 2010 Wimbledon men’s main draw singles round of 16 matches are scheduled to be completed today. This post will be throughout the day’s play as the matches are completed.
Play will begin at 12 noon local time in London. No wild cards entrants or qualifiers have made it through to the last 16 in fact 13 of the 16 players are seeds and 3 are Direct Acceptances (DA). The 3 DA’s are Daniel Brands, Yen-Hsun Lu and Paul-Henri Mathieu. The remaining 13 seeds are No.’s 1 to 6, 9, 10, 12, 15, 16, 18 and 32.
Of the 32 seeds, 19 seeds did not make it through to the round of 16. This means that there are 5 of the 8 round of 16 matches in which 2 seeds are playing against each other. 8 of the Top 10 seeds have survived thus far, which means there will be many great match ups to watch today.
Former Wimbledon champions Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Lleyton Hewitt will be in action in the 3rd round. As will former Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic and former US Open champion Andy Roddick. There are also another 3 players who have made it to a Grand Slam singles final in the past looking to go one step further, those players are Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Andy Murray and Robin Soderling.
In the top half of the draw the best ever performances by these remaining players at Wimbledon are: Federer winner 2004 to 2007 & 2009, Hewitt winner 2002, Roddick runner-up 2004, 2005 & in 2009, Djokovic semi finalist in 2007 and Berdych quarter finalist in 2007.
Melzer who plays Federer, after making the semi finals at Roland Garros last month has recorded his best Wimbledon result now as his best previous best was making the 3rd round in 2009, 2008 & 2005. Brands has achieved his best ever result in any Grand Slam singles event in his 1st appearance at Wimbledon, as has Lu whose best at Wimbledon was making the 2nd round in 2004 & 2005. Lu had never been past the 3rd round in any Grand Slam until now.
In the bottom half of the draw best ever performances by these remaining players at Wimbledon are: Nadal winner in 2008 and Murray a semi finalist in 2009. Soderling, Tsonga, Mathieu and Ferrer have equalled their best result by making the round of 16.
Soderling has now made the round of 16 for 2 years in a row. Tsonga made it this far in 2007 as did Mathieu and Ferrrer in 2006. Querrey whose round of 16 result is equals his best to date eclipsing his previous best result of making the 2nd round in 2009 as it is for Benneteau who made the 2nd round in 2004 & in 2006.
Pictured above is 26 year old Yen-Hsun Lu preparing to play his double handed backhand drive. The 1.8m Lu is from Chinese Taipei (Taiwan) and will be looking to become the 1st Asian man to win through to the Wimbledon quarter finals since Shuzo Matsuoka of Japan did in 1995. Lu is currently ranked No.82 and his career high ranking was No.55. His named is pronounced Yen-Soon Loo.
The players name that is bolded is OCA’s prediction of who will win each match. Any player who has a line drawn through their name is a seeded player who was expected to win through to the round of 16.
