The 2010 Wimbledon Gentlemen’s qualifying singles event began on Monday 14 June with 128 players battling for the 16 spots allocated to qualifiers in the main draw of the singles event. Today’s matches will begin at 11am local time in London.

Today only 48 players remain after the 1st round of qualifying being completed and half of the 2nd round of qualifying having been played as well. The final half of the men’s 2nd round matches will be played today, which means 16 men’s singles 32 matches for today. Once today’s matches have been completed only 32 players will remain. Tomorrow those 32 players will play in “The Qualifying Round”.

The qualifying matches are best of 3 sets with the final set being an advantage set i.e. you must win by at least 2 games as opposed to a tie break at 6 games all. All of the main draw singles matches will be best of 5 set matches with the final set being an advantage set. To qualify you must win 3 matches in a row.

Of the 32 seeds in the qualifying 9 of them were defeated in the 1st round, leaving 23 seeds still in contention to advance to “The Qualifying Round”. The Qualifying Round is the round that decides which players qualify for the main draw, because the winner of that round qualifies.

6 of the 8 British wild cards were unable to carry red, white and blue flag into the 2nd round of the Gentlemen’s qualifying singles event. Joshua Goodall performed well with a 6-3 6-4 upset of the No.21 seed and Daniel Evans had a great 10-8 in the final set win. The unseeded Alex Bogdanovic won through to the 2nd round with a straight sets win. In the draw below (WC) stands for wild card and a line through a players name means that player was seeded to win through to the next round but was defeated.

Pictured above is Tommy Haas completing this forehand drive during the 2009 Wimbledon semi final against Roger Federer. The 32 year old German who has recently taken dual citizenship (USA) has had hip surgery and will not be able to play Wimbledon this year. The 1.88m Haas is preparing to come back and play at the 2010 US Open where he made the quarter finals on 3 occasions. Haas first achieved his highest ranking of World No.2 on May 13 2002.
