Wimbledon 2010 Men’s Quarter Finals

The 2010 Wimbledon men’s singles quarter final matches are scheduled to be completed today. This post will be throughout the day’s play as the semi finalists are decided. Play will begin at 1pm local time in London, which is 8pm in Hong Kong.

No wild cards entrants or qualifiers have made it through to the quarter finals. Only 1 Direct Acceptance made the quarter finals – Yen-Hsun Lu who defeated Andy Roddick 9-7  in the 5th set in a great result for Tennis in Asia. The remaining 7 players are seeded No. 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 10 and 12.

Former Wimbledon champions Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal will be in action in today’s quarter finals, as will former Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic.

There are also another 3 players in action today who have made it to a Grand Slam singles final in the past. These players are Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Robin Soderling and local favourite Andy Murray who will all be looking to become the next Grand Slam champion at Wimbledon.

In the top half of the draw the best ever performances by these remaining players at Wimbledon are: Federer winner 2004 to 2007 & 2009, Djokovic semi finalist in 2007 and Berdych who has now equalled his previous best in 2007 by making the quarter finals. Berdych is pictured above during the forward swing phase of this single handed slice backhand.

The 1.8m Lu is from Chinese Taipei (Taiwan) and is also in the top half of the draw. This Wimbledon event is his career best effort in a major tournament.

Lu became the first Asian man to win through to the Wimbledon quarter finals since Shuzo Matsuoka of Japan did in 1995. Lu is currently ranked No.82 and his career high ranking was No.55. His named is pronounced Yen-Soon Loo.

In the bottom half of the draw best ever performances by the remaining players at Wimbledon are: Nadal winner in 2008 and Murray a semi finalist in 2009. Whereas Soderling and Tsonga have already set new personal bests at Wimbledon by making it past the round of 16.

  • Nadal d. Soderling in 4 sets
