The 2010 Wimbledon Ladies main draw singles matches began on Monday 21 June and are scheduled to be completed over 2 days. Yesterday the bottom half of the draw was played, which includes 5 time Wimbledon singles champion, Venus Williams. Today the top half of the draw is on and includes 3 time Wimbledon singles champion Serena Williams.

This post will be updated once the 1st round is completed to include all of the 1st round singles results. All 32 matches were completed on Day 1, which leaves another 32 1st round matches to be played today. Of the 16 seeded players in action 14 won through to the 2nd round and 2 were knocked out. The highest seed to be knocked out in the 1st round was 2010 Roland Garros champion No.5 Francesca Schiavone. The other seed who lost was No.34 Katernya Bondarenko.

UPDATED NEWS and RESULTS: last updated Tuesday 22 June at 7:30pm London time. As you can see when you look at the bolded names in the list of results below, OCA correctly chose 27 of the 1st 32 match winners in the bottom half of the draw

Pictured above is 28 year old Belgian Justine Henin, the 7-time Grand Slam singles champion has made it very clear that one of her main reasons for coming out of retirement was to win Wimbledon. The former World No.1 has remodelled her game in her comeback specifically to increase her aggressive style of play that she believes is required to win Wimbledon.

Henin won the grass court title at ‘S-Hertogenbosch in the Netherlands on Saturday 19 June. The 1.67m Henin was a runner-up at Wimbledon in 2001 and in 2006. Can she complete her Grand Slam set of singles titles at the 2010 Wimbledon event, just as Roger Federer did last year at Roland Garros? For a spot in the 3rd round Henin plays Kristina Barrois, whom she beat in straight sets in the quarter finals at the Unicef Open last week.

All of the British women lost their matches including direct acceptance Elena Baltacha who had some great results on the grass courts leading into Wimbledon. The 3 British wild cards were Laura Robson who had the toughest opponent in No.4 seed Jelena Jankovic, Melanie South and Katie O’Brien who went the distance with No.28 seed Alona Bondarenko.
