The 2010 Wimbledon women’s main draw singles matches will begin this Monday 21 June at 11am local time in London, United Kingdom. There are 128 main draw spots divided up between 12 Qualifiers (Q), 7 Wild Cards (WC), 2 Lucky Losers (LL) and 107 Direct Acceptances. Wimbledon which is known as The Championships, is the 3rd Grand Slam tournament of the year and the only one held on natural grass courts.

Pictured above is 20 year old Victoria Azarenka right at the contact point with the ball and racquet just after making contact with the ball for this forehand drive. The 1.8m Azarenka from Belarus made it to the quarter finals at Wimbledon last year in her best performance on the grass to date, before losing to eventual champion Serena Williams.

Azarenka’s career high ranking is No.6 and just like Agnieszka Radwanska she has made 3 Grand Slam singles quarter finals thus far. Azarenka returned to form just in time for  Wimbledon by making the final at Eastbourne yesterday on the grass courts at the AEGON International in Great Britain. Can Azarenka progress to the semi finals or beyond at Wimbledon this year?

Azarenka will need to be on her game when she plays 28 year old comeback player Mirjana Lucic, who made the Wimbledon semi finals in 1999 as a 17 year old, in the 1st round.

Since our last post about the women’s seeding for Wimbledon 2010, 2 of the top 32 seeds have withdrawn with injuries No.20 seed Dinara Safina with a lower back injury and No.22 seed Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez with a knee injury.

Melanie Oudin takes Safina’s spot in the draw because she was the next highest ranked player after the final seed (No.32), Sara Errani. Oudin of the USA becomes the No.33 seed. Katernya Bondarenko takes Martinez Sanchez’s spot in the draw because she was the next highest ranked player after Oudin. K.Bondarenko becomes the No.34 seed.

Once 2 extra players were promoted as seeds, then 2 spots for Lucky Losers opened up to replace the players who had been taken out of their original place in the draw. Therefore, Stephanie Dubois took Oudin’s original spot and Anastasia Pivovarova took Katernya Bondarenko’s orginal spot in the draw.

The seeded players do not receive a BYE in the 1st round of a Grand Slam event. To win the title a player must win 7 best of 3 set matches in a row. For further details about the women’s event you can visit -> Wimbledon Women’s Schedule of Play and Wimbledon 2010 Women’s Singles.

Being seeded means that you the earliest round in the event that you can meet another seeded player is 3rd round in which only 32 players remain. The players name that is bolded is OCA’s prediction of who will win each match.

The draw for the seeded players if they all win through to the 3rd round is:

  • (9) Li Na versus (19) Svetlana Kuznetsova
