Wimbledon 2011 Women’s Singles Draw: Seeding

The 2011 Wimbledon Women’s Singles Draw will be held tomorrow at 10am at the AELTC and the full list of 32 seeds are listed below. The Ladies singles draw at Wimbledon is based on the WTA rankings except when the Seeding Committee decide changes are necessary to make a more balanced draw. This year the WTA rankings as at June 13 were used to calculate the seeding for the 2011 Wimbledon women’s singles event.

What do you think about Wimbledon making it’s judgements on what makes a “more balanced draw”? Is it a good thing? Is it disrespectful to the other three Grand Slam tournaments and all other professional tennis tournaments? Is it fair to the players who work hard for the previous 12 months to earn their ranking and subsequent seeding benefits?

Pictured above is the 2010 Wimbledon Ladies singles quarter finalist Venus Williams preparing to play a double-handed backhand return of serve. The 1.85m Venus has been injured for most of the past 12 months but is a good chance to feature in the later stages of Wimbledon 2011. The American’s aggressive ground strokes, big serve and often damaging backhand return of serve combined with the fact that the shorter quicker points on the grass will suit her game and possibly mask her short Wimbledon preparation and lack of match specific fitness.

The 30-year-old Venus who turns 31 tomorrow and will be hoping to celebrate with even more Wimbledon success. Venus has made the Ladies final 8 times in the past 11 years, winning 5 titles – 2000, 2001, 2005, 2007 & 2008 and was a runner-up on 3 occasions 2002, 2003 & 2009. Serena Williams was the player who defeated Venus in all 3 Wimbledon finals that Venus has lost.

So far two players who would have been seeds at Wimbledon this year have withdrawn with injury. Kim Clijsters was the No.2 seed but withdrew injured and Alisa Kleybanova whois currently ranked at No.24. If any further players who have been seeded withdraw with an injury OnCourt Advantage will update you right here-> …

In the seeding list below the actual WTA ranking is listed after each player’s name. The seeding committee only bumped up two players in the seedings this year as compared to their actual WTA ranking – Venus and Serena.
