The 2012 Wimbledon women’s qualifying singles draw 1st round matches begin on Tuesday 19 June at 11am local time in Roehampton in the United Kingdom. Wimbledon 2012 is the 8th MAJOR tournament of the “BIG 14″ tournaments each year for the women and has 208 players vying for the title, a maximum of 2,000 WTA ranking points and £1,150,000 (pounds sterling) in prize money for the winner. In this post some interesting facts about the women’s qualifying and the full list of the qualifying draw will be provided.

The Top 24 ranked players amongst the 88 Direct Acceptances according to the WTA rankings on 11 June 2012 become the 24 seeds. The 24 seeds were ranked from world No.102 (Melinda CZINK) through to No.142 (Bibiane SCHOOFS).

Pictured above after making contact with the ball for this forehand volley is 2012 Wimbledon wild card recipient Yaroslava SHVEDOVA. Shvedova improved 80 spots with the 560 WTA ranking points she earned at Roland Garros to jump up to No.62. Shvedova is currently ranked No.65, which is well inside the cut-off to earn a main draw spot at Wimbledon but only AFTER the cut-off date and her recent Grand Slam quarter final performance and her new ranking are the reasons she received a wild card.

The 1.8m Shvedova won seven matches in a row to make the quarter finals at Roland Garros this year, including three of them to qualify for the main draw. Shvedova had to play qualifying because her ranking was No.142 and along the way defeated defending Roland Garros champion Li Na in the round of 16, 6-2 6-0 after losing the first set 6-3. The former No.29 lost narrowly in the quarter finals 6-4 in the third set to reigning Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova. Who will be the best performed qualifier at Wimbledon this year?
