Wimbledon is a Grand Slam category tournament played on natural grass from June 19 to July 7. As soon as the names are drawn OnCourt Advantage will add the players into the projected 3rd round match-ups for the seeds and post the full singles main draw here-> The 2012 Wimbledon Women’s Singles Draw: 1st Round.

After winning Wimbledon as a 17-year-old Maria SHARAPOVA made two straight semi finals (2005 and 2006). The 2011 Wimbledon final was her first time to the quarter finals or better since 2006. The 25-year-old Russian is pictured above setting the ball in place during her service action at Wimbledon in 2011. After winning the singles title at Roland Garros to complete her career Grand Slam set, the 1.88m Sharapova will be looking to win again where it first started, at Wimbledon, this time as the No.1 seed.

The Seeds: In a 128-player sized draw there are 32 seeded players in order to keep the one seed for each four spots in the draw ratio according to tournament draw rules. All of the 32 seeds are separated in the draw so they play two rounds against lower ranked opponents who are unseeded, before they can meet another seed in the 3rd round. The seeded players do not receive a BYE in the 1st round of a Grand Slam event. To win the title a player must win seven best of three set matches in a row.

The Ladies singles draw at Wimbledon is based on the latest WTA rankings before the draw is made i.e. 18 June 2012, except when the Seeding Committee decide changes are necessary “to make a more balanced draw”. The Top 32 ranked players in the draw at that date become the most likely Top 32 seeds, except when former Wimbledon champions like Venus WILLIAMS and former Grand Slam champions like Kim CLIJSTERS have fallen in the rankings possibly due to injury. The current Top 32 WTA ranked are listed below…
