Please leave a comment below this article regarding anything YOU would like to know about in tennis, have explained or suggest for me to write about here at OnCourt Advantage. To watch the tennis in Singapore you need to add 12 hours to the local time in Cincinnati to work out the equivalent Singapore time for the daily 2012 Cincinnati Open Order of Play.
The official tournament name is the Western and Southern Open due to title sponsorship naming rights. As soon as it is drawn OnCourt Advantage will provide the names of the projected round of 16 match-ups for the seeds and post the full singles main draw here-> The 2012 Cincinnati Open Men’s Singles Draw: 1st Round. The 2012 men’s entire tournament schedule of play includes what rounds are played each day and at what time of day, how the the prize money and ranking points are allocated for each round plus further interesting event details.
The Seeds: In a 64-player sized draw there are 16 seeded players in order to keep the one seed for each four spots in the draw ratio according to tournament draw rules. Cincinnati has a 56-player draw so only the Top 8 seeds all receive a BYE in the 1st round and await the 24 winners of the 1st round matches in the 2nd round. The seeds are selected according to the latest ATP rankings before the draw is made i.e. as of 6 August 2012. The Top 16 ranked players in the draw at that date become the Top 16 seeds.
The 2012 Cincinnati Open men’s singles seeds are:
- Seeds 1-8: 1-Roger FEDERER, 2-Novak DJOKOVIC, 3-Andy MURRAY, 4-David FERRER, 5-Tomas BERDYCH, 6-Juan Martin DEL POTRO, 7-Janko TIPSAREVIC, 8-Juan MONACO;
- Seeds 9-16: 9-John ISNER, 10-Mardy FISH, 11-Gilles SIMON, 12-Marin CILIC, 13-Alexandr DOLGOPOLOV, 14-Kei NISHIKORI, 15-Philipp KOHLSCHREIBER and 16-Andy RODDICK.
If any of the seeded players withdraw before taking the court for their first match I will update the seeded players list above straight away. A seed that withdraws is replaced by the next highest ranked direct acceptance i.e. Richard GASQUET as the World No.21. If any further seeds are unable to play this major tournament No.22 Stanislas WAWRINKA becomes a seed, followed by No.23 Florian MAYER.
The Wild Cards: Three of the four wild cards went to Americans outside the direct acceptance cut-off ranking: current World No.78 Brian BAKER, No.106 James BLAKE and No.35 Sam QUERREY. Querrey rose to No.35 this week, which is well inside the cut-off ranking of No.50 and would have earned him a direct acceptance. However, on the entry deadline of 25 June 2012, Querrey was ranked at No.64, which is why he missed entry and required a wild card to start in the main draw.
The fourth wild card went to former World No.1 and dual Grand Slam singles champion Lleyton HEWITT of Australia. The 31-year-old Hewitt is the current World No.134 and was the runner-up at Cincinnati in 2002 and 2004.
The Qualifiers: The 28-player qualifying tournament begins on Saturday 11 August and concludes on Sunday 12 August. As soon as each of the 7 players win their 2nd round of qualifying and therefore qualify for the main draw, OnCourt Advantage will add their names to the 2012 Cincinnati Open Men’s Singles Draw: 1st Round post.
