The 2012 Indian Wells Open men’s main draw singles matches begin on Thursday 8 March at 10am local time in the Southern California Desert in the USA. In this post a number of interesting facts will be provided, including how the ATP ranking points and prize money are allocated for each round and what the schedule of play is for the entire tournament.

The men’s event schedule begins with the 48-player qualifying singles draw on Tuesday 8 March. The Men’s Singles Final will be played on Sunday March 18. In the past 12 years eight of the Indian Wells men’s champions have finished the year ranked in the Top 3. The total financial commitment for the 2012 men’s tournament is 5,549,969 US dollars, with the total prize money for the men’s singles event being $4,694,969.

The ATP ranking points and prize money for the men’s tournament is awarded to the players like this:

  1. The winner earns 1,000 points + $1,000,000;
  2. The runner-up earns 600 points + $500,000;
  3. The two semi finalists earn 360 + $200,000;
  4. The four quarter finalists earn 180 + $100,000,
  5. The 8 players who lose in the round of 16 earn 90 + $43,520;
  6. The 16 players who lose in the 3rd round earn 45 + $23,291;
  7. The 32 players who lose in the 2nd round earn 25 + $12,725;
  8. The *32 players who lose in the 1st round earn 10 points + $7,709;
  9. The 12 players who qualify earn 16 points for qualifying;
  10. The 12 players who lose in the final round of qualifying earn 8 points + $2,296;
  11. The 24 players who lose in the 1st round of qualifying receive $1,175 but DO NOT earn any ranking points.

The schedule of play for entire 2012 Indian Wells Open men’s singles draw is:

  • Tuesday 6 March: Qualifying Draw 1st round from 10am;
  • Wednesday 7 March: Qualifying Draw 2nd round from 11am;
  • Thursday 8 March: Main Draw 1st round from 11am and 7pm;
  • Friday 9 March: 1st round from 11am and 7pm;
  • Saturday 10 March: 2nd round from 11am and 7pm;
  • Sunday 11 March: 2nd round from 11am and 7pm;
  • Monday 12 March: 3rd round from 11am and 7pm;
  • Tuesday 13 March: 3rd round from 11am and 7pm;
  • Wednesday 14 March: Round of 16 from 11am and 7pm;
  • Thursday 15 March: Quarter Finals from 11am and 7pm;
  • Friday 16 March: Quarter Finals from 11am and 6pm;
  • Saturday 17 March: Semi Finals from 11am; and
  • Sunday 18 March: Men’s Singles Finals at 11am.

*The points awarded to a 1st round loser vary according to how they were allocated a place in the 1st round.

To get you started, did you know that if any of the 32 seeded players who lose their first match after being given a bye into the 2nd round are treated as a 1st round loser for ranking points allocation purposes i.e. they receive 10 points for losing their first match.
