The 2011 Monte Carlo Open runner-up David FERRER is pictured above demonstrating one of his key strengths, moving himself into great position to execute his groundstrokes, for this cross-court double-handed backhand at Monte Carlo last year. The 1.75m Ferrer has won 14 ATP Tour singles titles and been a runner-up 14 times, including in three Masters 1000 events, Monte Carlo, Shanghai and Rome. The 30-year-old Spaniard has a 24 wins to just three losses record in 2012, including winning three singles titles and will be looking to go one step further at Monte Carlo this week.
The Seeds: In a 64-player sized draw there are 16 seeded players in order to keep the 1 seed for each 4 spots in the draw ratio according to tournament draw rules. Monte Carlo has a 56-player draw so only the Top 8 seeds all receive a BYE in the 1st round and await the 24 winners of the 1st round matches in the 2nd round.
The seeds are selected according to the latest ATP rankings before the draw is made i.e. as of 9 April 2012. The Top 16 ranked players in the draw at that date become the Top 16 seeds; therefore the seeding can be worked out before it is officially announced.
The 2012 Monte Carlo Open men’s singles seeds are:
- Seeds 1-8: 1-Novak DJOKOVIC, 2-Rafael NADAL, 3-Andy MURRAY, 4-Jo-Wilfried TSONGA, 5-David FERRER, 6-Tomas BERDYCH, 7-Janko TIPSAREVIC, 8-Nicolas ALMAGRO;
- Seeds 9-16: 9-Gilles SIMON, 10-Feliciano LOPEZ, 11-Juan MONACO, 12-Kei NISHIKORI, 13-Fernando VERDASCO, 14-Florian MAYER, 15-Jurgen MELZER and 16-Alexandr DOLGOPOLOV.
If any of the seeded players withdraw before taking the court for their first match I will update the seeded players list above straight away. That seed would be replaced by the next highest ranked direct acceptance i.e. Marin CILIC as the World No.23. If any further seeds are unable to play this major tournament No.24 Radek STEPANEK becomes a seed, followed by No.25 Milos RAONIC.
The Wild Cards: Two of the four men’s wild cards are local players who are representing Monaco Jean-Rene LISNARD and Benjamin BALLERET, whilst Paul-Henri MATHIEU of France and Potito STARACE of Italy were also awarded wild cards.
The Qualifiers: The 28-player qualifying tournament begins on Saturday 14 April and concludes on Sunday 15 April. As soon as each of the 7 players win their 2nd round of qualifying and therefore qualify for the main draw, OnCourt Advantage will list their names here-> Frederico GIL, Mikhail KUKUSHKIN, Simone BOLELLI, Federico DELBONIS, Alessandro GIANNESSI, Guillaume RUFIN and Victor HANESCU.
