The 2010 Rome Internazionali BNL d’Italia men’s singles event will showcase 3 of the top 4 seeds today at the new stadium. No.1 seed Roger Federer, No.2 seed Novak Djokovic and No.4 seed Andy Murray will all play on centre court today from 1pm local time in Rome.
The 2 main stadium courts in Rome are called Campo Centrale and Campo Nicola Pietrangeli. “Campo” is the Italian word for “court” and “centrale” means centre. The umpiring in Rome is spoken in Italian, however, the scores are announced in Italian first and then repeated straight afterwards in English.
The Italian words for the tennis scoring terms are:
- Love = zero
- 15 = quindici
- 30 = trenta
- 40 = quaranta
- deuce = parita’
- advantage = vantaggio
- all = pari
- game = gioco
So when you hear “trenta pari”, it means 30 all.
Campo Nicola Pietrangeli is named after the man who is often considered the best Italian player ever. Pietrangeli won 2 French Open titles at Roland Garros and was also a runner-up twice, all of these results were achieved between 1959 and 1964.
Pietrangeli won Rome Internazionali BNL dÍtalia in 1957 and in 1961. In 1961 he defeated Rod Laver in the final 6-8, 6-1, 6-1 , 6-2. Pietrangeli’s 73rd birthday in 2006 was when he was honoured by having the stadium court named after him.
One match that promises to be very interesting on today’s schedule is the 1st match on Campo Pietrangeli at 1pm between Former World No.1 Lleyton Hewitt and No.9 seed Mikhail Youzhny. The pair have had 3 very close final set matches against each other. Youzhny won their last match in Tokyo last year and Hewitt had won all 3 of their matches prior to that.
Pictured above is the Italian No.1 Andreas Seppi preparing to launch himself at the ball during his service action. The 26 year old Seppi is the current World No.47 and today plays the out of form Andy Murray, who he has beaten once before.
The Italian crowd and the 1.9m Seppi will be looking to extend Murray’s slump at what is usually a low point for Murray each year. Murray has never passed the 2nd round in Rome.
16 of the 1st round singles matches have been played. Of the 8 seeds in action, 2 will play today, 2 seeds were knocked out and 4 seeds won through into the 2nd round. 2 Qualifiers upset their opponents including Santiago Giraldo who defeated No.12 seed Juan Carlos Ferrero.
All 3 of the Italian Wild Cards, Lorenzi, Volandri and Starace upset their higher ranked opponents. The final Italian wild card Simone Bolelli, is playing today and will be hoping to make it 4 out of 4 against Lucky Loser Simon Greul.
Today the remaining 8 1st round singles matches will be played and 4 of the 2nd round singles matches will be played as well. The following are the 1st round results thus far:
