Rome Open Tennis 2012

The 2012 Italian Open in Rome is the 6th MAJOR men’s tournament of the “BIG 14″ and the 6th of the 14 MAJORS for the women. Rome is a MAJOR tournament for both the men and women because it is one of only five WTA Premier FIVE category events each year and one of nine ATP World Tour Masters 1000 category events each year.

The official name of the Italian Open is the Internazionali BNL d’Italia, due to title sponsorship naming rights. Internazionali d’Italia means Italy’s International Championships and BNL are part of the BNP Paribas banking group.

The 2012 tournament is being held at the Foro Italico site in Italy where it has been held since 1935. The court surface is red clay and the stadium court seats 10,500 people. This joint tournament is being held for the 69th time this year for the men and the 68th time for the women.

This tournament runs from Saturday 12 May to Sunday 20 May. The men’s and women’s singles qualifying event is being held on Friday and Saturday and Sunday May 12 and 13. The main draw singles event runs from Sunday 13 May through to the Singles Final day on Sunday 20 May. 

The 2011 women’s singles champion was No.7 seed Maria SHARAPOVA who defeated No.6 seed Samantha STOSUR in the final 6-2, 6-4. The 2011 men’s singles champion was No.2 seed Novak DJOKOVIC who defeated No.1 seed Rafael NADAL in the final 6-4, 6-4 to capture his second Italian Open singles title after winning his first in 2008.
