The 2010 Shanghai Open men’s main draw singles round of 16 matches have been completed. The big news is that No.1 seed Rafael Nadal was outplayed by No.13 seed Jurgen Melzer. All 4 quarter final matches will be played today on the Stadium Court and the schedule of play is listed below.

4 of the Top 5 seeds won through to the quarter finals, No.2 Novak Djokovic, No.3 Roger Federer, No.4 Andy Murray and No.5 Robin Soderling. They are joined by No.12 seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, No.13 seed Jurgen Melzer and 2 direct acceptances Juan Monaco and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez. OCA will keep you updated with all of the quarter final results and scores right here on this post. Stay tuned as the fight continues for the 5 remaining spots in the ATP Tour Finals.

Pictured above is Jurgen Melzer as he is preparing to play this double handed backhand drive. The 29 year old from Austria won the rematch against Nadal from this year’s semi final at Roland Garros to move to 1-3 against Nadal in their head-to-head meetings. The 1.83m Melzer achieved his career high ranking this Monday by moving up to be ranked as the World No.12.

Melzer played far better tennis than World No.1 Rafael Nadal and hit 20 winners more than his opponent and committed 1 less unforced error than the super-consistent Nadal. Melzer needs to make the final to make it to the Top 10 for the very first time. He is also playing for a career best result in an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament and a spot in the ATP Tour Finals for the first time in his career.

Melzer plays 26 year old Argentine Juan Monaco for a spot in the semi finals. Monaco holds a 4-1 advantage against Melzer in their previous matches with the most recent meeting being in Tokyo Japan last week where Melzer won 6-1 in the final set. In fact all of their matches except one have been decided in the 3rd and final set.

The player’s name that is bolded in the quarter final draw below is OCA’s prediction of who will win each match. Any player whose name is italicised and has his first name removed is a seeded player who was expected to win through to the quarter finals.
