The 2010 Shanghai Open men’s main draw singles quarter final matches have been completed. The big news is that 3 of the Top 4 seeds lived up to their seeding by winning through to the semi finals. Today’s semi finals will be played on the Stadium Court with the biggest match of Juan Monaco’s career followed by a rematch of the fantastic semi final at this year’s US Open between Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer.

Pictured above is Andy Murray as he is preparing to play an overhead smash. The 23 year old from Scotland became the fourth player to qualify for the ATP Tour Finals in London by winning through to the semi finals in Shanghai with his first time playing this tournament. The 1.9m Murray is currently ranked No.4 whereas his career high ranking was No.2, which he first achieved on August 17 2009.

The dual Grand Slam singles runner-up (at the 2008 US Open and 2010 Australian Open), has won 5 ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournaments all on hard courts. Murray will be a strong threat to win a 2nd major tournament this year at Shanghai to make it 3 years in a row where he has won 2 major tournaments. Murray has won the Canadian Open twice, the Miami Open, Madrid Open and the Cincinnati Open so far.

The No.4 seed defeated No.12 seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the quarter finals 6-2 6-2 in just 54 minutes to improve to 4-1 in their head-to-head matches. No.2 seed Novak Djokovic won his quarter final match against Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-2 6-3 in 1 hour and 6 minutes to maintain his perfect record against the Spaniard, which now stands at 4 straight wins.

The most competitive quarter final match was between No.13 seed Jurgen Melzer who defeated Rafael Nadal and Juan Monaco as they battled it out for 2 hours and 49 minutes. Monaco improved his head-to-head record over Melzer to 5-1 with a 6-7 (6-8), 7-5, 6-2 as both players fought hard to achieve a career best result in a Masters 1000 singles tournament by making a semi final. No.3 seed Roger Federer made quick work of No.5 seed Robin Soderling, 6-1 6-1 in just 53 minutes to improve to 14-1 in their head-to-head matches.
