Singapore 2012 Men’s Singles Draw

The 2012 Singapore ATP Challenger men’s main draw singles matches will begin on Monday 27 February at 4pm local time in Singapore. Join me at the tennis in Singapore. ATP Challenger’s are the stepping stone to for players to build their ranking in order to earn the right to compete at the highest level in men’s tennis i.e. the ATP Tour in the 250, 500, Masters 1000 and Grand Slams.

Future stars of the game need to compete in Challengers and progress their game, experience and rankings so can be seen in action as they fight for valuable ATP ranking points as Pete SAMPRAS, Roger FEDERER and Rafael NADAL did in the past. This tournament is the only ATP or WTA world rankings points tournament played in Singapore for 2012.

There are 32 main draw spots divided up between 4 Qualifiers (Q), 4 Wild Cards (WC) and 24 Direct Acceptances. The direct acceptances are the 24 highest ranked players according to the ATP Tour rankings at the cut-off deadline for entry, which was 6 February 2012. The official draw will be held on Friday 24 February for both the main draw and the qualifying event at 7pm at the Quality Hotel Marlow.

The Seeds: In a 32-player sized draw there are 8 seeded players. This means that all of the 8 seeds are separated in the draw so they play two rounds against lower ranked opponents who are unseeded, before they can meet another seed in the quarter finals.

The seeding is allocated to the 8 highest ranked players according to the latest ATP rankings BEFORE the draw is made. These latest rankings were released on Monday 20 February therefore the seeding can be worked out before it is officially announced. Japan’s Go SOEDA at the 2011 Singapore ATP Challenger is No.82 currently just 1 spot shy of his career best ranking. The 1.78m SOEDA is the No.2 seed this year.

The 8 seeds were ranked from World No.64 (LU Yen-Hsun) through to No.211 (Amir WEINTRAUB). The last direct acceptance into the main draw was Timo NIEMINEN from Finland who was ranked No.314 at the cut-off date.

The 2012 Singapore ATP Challenger 8 singles seeds are:

1-LU Yen-Hsun, 2-Go SOEDA, 3-Yuichi SUGITA, 4-Danai UDOMCHOKE, 5-YANG Tsung-Hua, 6-Benjamin MITCHELL, 7-Harri HELIOVAARA and 8-Amir WEINTRAUB.

If any of the seeded players withdraw before taking the court for their 1st round match another player will replace that seed. If a replacement seed is selected he would be the next highest ranked player from the direct acceptances i.e. Jimmy WANG.

The Wild Cards: will be awarded at the discretion of the Tournament Committee and announced on Thursday 23 February. As soon as this announcement is made the 4 wild card recipients will be listed here-> HUANG Liang-Chi, Christopher RUNGKAT, Peerakiat SIRILUITHAIWATTANA and Vishnu VARDHAN.

The Qualifiers: the 32-player qualifying tournament sets the task of winning 3 best-of-three tiebreak set matches in order to qualify for the main draw. These four players will have their names added here as soon as they win their final round of qualifying -> Divij SHARAN, Jose (Rubin) STATHAM, Hiroyasu EHARA and Henri LAAKSONEN.
