Last year in Singapore the WTA Finals singles and doubles draws were held on different days. A great improvement this year is that both singles and doubles draws are being held at the same time and place with the all players enjoying and attending one ceremony.
The 8 players are seeded according to their total WTA points accumulated in this calendar year as at the time of the draw i.e. 19 October 2015. The WTA Finals 2015 seeds are:
- Simona HALEP with 5,790 points from 17 tournaments
- Garbiñe MUGURUZA with 4,511 points from 19 tournaments
- Maria SHARAPOVA with 4,322 points from 16 tournaments
- Petra KVITOVA with 3,491 points from 18 tournaments
- Agnieszka RADWANSKA with 3,425 points from 23 tournaments
- Angelique KERBER with 3,400 points from 24 tournaments
- Lucie SAFAROVA with 3,221 points from 20 tournaments
- Flavia PENNETTA with 3,153 points from 18 tournaments
How the Draw is made:
A Round Robin format is used for the draw, splitting four players into each group. The groups are named according to the Singapore flag colours, so there is a Red group and a White group.
The 8 players names are drawn out in a 3-step sequence so that the the groups are fair and all according to seeding. Each group will only have one player from the No.1 and No.2 seeds, one player of the No.3 and No.4 seeds then 2 players of the No.5 to No.8 seeds to make 4 players in each group evenly divided.
Step 1: The Red group was selected as first in the order followed by the White group i.e. whoever was drawn first of the Top 2 seeds would go in to the Red group. No.1 seed Simona Halep was drawn in the Red so No.2 seed Garbiñe Muguruza is drawn into the White.
Step 2: Only the groupings for the No.3 and No.4 seeds are decided in this step, No.3 seed Maria Sharapova was drawn next so she joined Halep in the Red group, therefore No.4 seed Petra Kvitova is joins Muguruza in the White.
Step 3: The final four seeds groupings are are decided in this step, No.5 seed Agnieszka Radwanska and No.8 seed Flavia Pennetta were drawn next so they joined Halep and Sharapova in the Red group. Therefore No.6 seed Angelique Kerber and No.7 seed Lucie Safarova join Muguruza and Kvitova in the White.
Who is in which group?
RED: Simona Halep (1), Maria Sharapova (3), Agnieszka Radwanska (5) and Flavia Pennetta (8).
WHITE: Garbiñe Muguruza (2), Petra Kvitova (4), Angelique Kerber (6) and Lucie Safarova (7).
If any of the seeded players withdraw after the draw has been made or incur an injury before, during or after playing a Round Robin match or matches, then the 9th highest ranked player for 2015 replaces the withdrawing player. If more than one player is unable to continue the tournament then the 10th best player of 2015 would be awarded the spot in the draw and so on.
No.9 is Timea Bacsinszky with 3,133 points from 16 tournaments
No.10 is Venus Wiliams with 3,091 points from 17 tournaments
No.11 is Carla Suarez Navarro with 3,030 points from 23 tournaments
