The Seeds: In a 64-player sized draw there are 16 seeded players in order to keep the one seed for each four spots in the draw ratio according to tournament draw rules. Canada has a 48-player draw so all of the 16 seeds receive a BYE in the 1st round and await the 16 winners of the 1st round matches in the 2nd round. The seeds are selected according to the latest WTA rankings before the draw is made i.e. as of 30 July 2012. The Top 16 ranked players in the draw at that date become the Top 16 seeds.
The 2012 Canadian Open women’s singles seeds are:
- Seeds 1-8: 1-Victoria AZARENKA, 2-Agnieszka RADWANSKA, 3-Maria SHARAPOVA, 4-Samantha STOSUR, 5-Petra KVITOVA, 6-Angelique KERBER, 7-Caroline WOZNIACKI, 8-Sara ERRANI;
- Seeds 9-16: 9-Marion BARTOLI, 10-LI Na, 11-Ana IVANOVIC, 12-Vera ZVONAREVA, 13-Dominika CIBULKOVA, 14-Maria KIRILENKO, 15-Jelena JANKOVIC and 16-Flavia PENNETTA.
If any of the seeded players withdraw before taking the court for their first match I will update the seeded players list above straight away. A seed that withdraws is replaced by the next highest ranked direct acceptance i.e. Sabine LISICKI as the World No.20. If any further seeds are unable to play this major tournament No.22 Lucie SAFAROVA becomes a seed, followed by No.23 Nadia PETROVA.
The Wild Cards: All three wild cards went to Canadians and all Québecers in fact: current World No. 294 and No.1 Canadian Aleksandra WOZNIAK, Canadian No.2 (World No.151) Stephanie DUBOIS and Canada’s No.6 (World No.294) 18-year-old Eugenie BOUCHARD.
The Qualifiers: The 56-player qualifying tournament begins on Saturday 4 August and concludes on Monday 6 August. As soon as each of the 8 players win their 3rd round of qualifying and therefore qualify for the main draw, OnCourt Advantage will add their names to the 2012 Canadian Open Women’s Singles Draw: 1st Round post.
