The 2010 China Open women’s main draw singles round of 16 matches have been completed. The big news was that No.1 seed Caroline Wozniacki’s victory means that she will be World No.1 for the first time when the new WTA rankings are released on Monday 11 October. All 4 quarter final matches will be played today and the schedule of play is listed below.
After the announcement that Venus Williams will not be able to play in the WTA Tour Finals due to a reoccurring knee injury. The chances for Jelena Jankovic, Elena Dementieva and Li Na who is the only one of these three still competing for the China Open singles title, to qualify in one of the Top 8 spots has increased substantially. By our calculations 2 of these 3 women will finish ranked in the Top 8 spots in the world for 2010.
4 of the Top 10 seeds won through to the quarter finals and are joined by No.15 seed Shahar Peer, former World No.1 Ana Ivanovic, Timea Bacsisnzky and qualifier Anastasija Sevastova who progressed courtesy of a walkover by the injured No.1 3 seed Nadia Petrova.
OCA will keep you updated with all of the quarter final results right here on this post. All 4 matches are scheduled for today, after which the 4 semi finalists will be decided.
Pictured above is 2008 Roland Garros Singles champion Ana Ivanovic preparing to serve. The 22 year old from Serbia is trying to work her way back up the rankings and by making through to the quarter finals here will return back to the Top 30. Ivanovic has won 11 of her past 15 matches to turn her season around after not enjoying much success prior to that in 2010.
The 1.86m Ivanovic is a former World No.1 and next plays the new World No.1 Caroline Wozniacki for a spot in the semi finals. Ivanovic holds a 2-0 advantage against Wozniacki in their previous matches with the most recent meeting being at Roland Garros in 2008 where Ivanovic won 6-4 6-1. Ivanovic may be able to take advantage of the fact that her opponent claimed the World No.1 ranking last night and after all of the relief and celebration may be a bit flat today.
The player’s name that is bolded in the draw below is OCA’s prediction of who will win each match. Any player whose name is italicised and has her first name removed is a seeded player who was expected to win through to the quarter finals.
The draw for the 2010 China Open Women’s singles quarter finals is:
