The 2010 Cincinnati Open women’s qualifying singles event is now complete. The qualifying began on Saturday 7 August with 48 players battling for the 12 spots allocated to qualifiers in the main draw of the singles event.
Players needed to win 2 matches in a row over 2 days in order to earn a spot in the main draw. For No.5 seed Sorana Cirstea of Romania she needed to win 2 matches in one day. Cirstea defeated wild card Daniele Mills of the USA today and then won again against No.15 seed Simona Halep to qualify. Of the Top 12 seeds in the qualifying only 6 of these players who were seeded to qualify won through. The remaining 6 qualifiers comprised 5 seeds ranging from 14 to 25 and 1 unseeded player, Nuria Vives Llagostera of Spain.
Once a player qualifies she earns 30 WTA ranking points for qualifying even if she loses in the 1st round of the main draw. Of the 13 American women in the qualifying draw only 1 American successfully completed her mission to qualify, No.10 seed Vania King. Last year only 1 American qualified as well, Melanie Oudin, who this year is ranked high enough to gain direct entry into the main draw.
Pictured above is Daniela Hantuchova right before the contact point between the ball and the racquet for this double handed backhand. The 1.81m Slovakian made the quarter finals at Cincinnati last year before being knocked out by Flavia Pennetta. The 27 year old Hantuchova will be looking to achieve some great results on her favourite American hard courts over the next few months.
Hantuchova made the semi finals in Cincinnati in 2005 and has twice won the Indian Wells Open singles title (2002 and 2007). Hantuchova’s best ranking to date is No.5, which she first achieved on January 27 2003 and her best grand slam singles result was making the semi finals of the 2008 Australian Open.
The player’s whose names are bolded in the list below are the 12 players who have qualified for the women’s singles main draw. The highest ranked player to lose in the final round of qualifying was No.6 seed Ekaterina Makarova which means she would be the first player to take a spot in the main draw as a Lucky Loser if any player withdraws from the tournament BEFORE playing her 1st round match.
A player must sign-in at the time specified by the tournament management to be eligible for any possible Lucky Loser spot. The next 3 ladies in line are the No.9, No.12 and No.15 seeds (Chan, Scheepers and Halep), who all lost at the last hurdle. Chan most likely will NOT sign in for a LL spot given she retired in her match today.
The results in the final round of the 2010 Cincinnati women’s qualifying singles event are:
- Nuria Vives Llagostera defeated (WC) Hsieh Su-Wei 6-7 (3-7), 7-6 (9-7), 6-2
