The Women’s main draw singles matches begin on Wednesday 10 March local time at Indian Wells, California in the USA. The draw has been completed for the Indian Wells Open with 96 main draw spots divided up between 12 Qualifiers, 8 Wild Cards, 1 Lucky Loser and 75 Direct Acceptances.

All of the top 32 ranked players are seeded and have a BYE in the 1st round, so await the winners of the 1st round matches. The seeding and draw for the top 32 players, if they all win through their 1st match in the 2nd round is:

  • (1) Svetlana Kuznetsova versus (27) Agnes Szavay
  • (23) Alisa Kleybanova v. (14) Kim Clijsters
  • (9) Flavia Pennetta v. (17) Shahar Peer
  • (26) Dominika Cibulkova v. (6) Jelena Jankovic
  • (3) Victoria Azarenka v. (28) Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez
  • (21) Daniela Hantuchova v. (13) Yanina Wickmayer
  • (12) Vera Zvonareva v. (24) Ana Ivanovic
  • (25) Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova v. (8) Samantha Stosur

…which are the match ups for the top half of the draw. In the bottom half of the draw, the players who are seeded to meet are:

  • (5) Agnieszka Radwanska v. (31) Gisela Dulko
  • (22) Sabine Lisicki v. (11) Marion Bartoli
  • (15)  Francesca Schiavone v. (19) Aravane Rezai
  • (30) Aleksandra Wozniak v. (4) Elena Dementieva
  • (7) Li Na v. (29) Anabel Medina Garrigues
  • (18) Zheng Jie v. (10) Maria Sharapova
  • (16) Nadia Petrova v. (20) Alona Bondarenko
  • (32) Maria Kirilenko v. (2) Caroline Wozniacki

There is a much better chance for the 32 seeds to make it to through to play off against another seed at Indian Wells than in most tournaments, because in this tournament they only need to win one match to do so. Watch out for some upsets in the 2nd round and some great match ups in the 3rd round!

The 12 Qualifiers who won through their 2 matches each in the qualifying tournament are: Elena Baltacha of Great Britain, Nuria Llagostera Vives (Spain), Petra Martic (Croatia), Edina Gallovits (Romania), Tsvetana Pironkova (Bulgaria), Michelle Larcher de Brito (Portugal), Shenay Perry (USA), Viktoriya Kutuzova (Ukraine), Karolina Sprem (Croatia), Chan Yung-Jan (China), Akgul Amanmuradova (Uzbekistan) and the only 1 of 6 Wild Cards into the qualifying event to qualify Sloane Stephens (USA) .

The 1st round matches from the top of the draw through to the bottom of the draw is:

Cornet v. Suarez Navarro, (Q) Chan v. Voegele, (Q) Pironkova v. (Q) Amanmuradova, Zahlavova Strycova v. Petkovic, Brianti v. Kvitova, Shvedova v. (WC) Mattek-Sands, (Q) Kutuzova v. The player’s name that is bolded is OCA’s prediction of who will win each match. Pictured above is Wild Card Ajla Tomljanovic in the ready position to return serve. The 16 year old Tomljanovic is the youngest player in the draw and has a shot at playing No.6 seed Jelena Jankovic if she can upset tough opponent Petra Martic.
