Madrid Open 2012 Results: Women

The 2012 Madrid Open is the third of the four WTA Premier Mandatory “BIG 14″ MAJOR tournaments played each year. In this post the match results for each day will be continually added to this page throughout the entire tournament, to make it easier for you to know who is progressing through the draw and what the final scores were.

The full list for the 2012 Madrid 1st Round Women’s Singles Draw and for the 2012 Madrid 1st Round Men’s Singles Draw also include who the seeds are, which seeds are drawn to play off against each other, plus who the wild cards and qualifiers are and who they play in the 1st round.

In the lists of results that will be featured below, all players except for the direct acceptances will have letters or a number in brackets in front of their names when they are a seeded player e.g. [1] for the No.1 seed, or a wild card entrant (WC) or a player who won through the qualifying tournament i.e. a qualifier (Q).

The 2011 Madrid women’s singles quarter-finalist Lucie SAFAROVA is pictured above at Roland Garros in 2010 preparing to make contact with the ball for this double-handed backhand ground stroke. The 1.77m Safarova achieved her best result in Madrid by making the semi finals in 2010 after defeating current World No.2 Maria Sharapova in the 1st round and took current World No.1 Victoria Azarenka to three sets in last year’s quarter final match.

Safarova achieved her best Grand Slam singles result by making the quarter finals at the 2007 Australian OpenThe 25-year-old Czech achieved her career-high singles ranking to date of No.21 last week on 30 April 2012. The left-hander has been a runner-up in her past four WTA singles finals including two of them in 2011. Safarova has won four WTA singles titles with last being in 2008.
