Miami 2011 Women’s Singles Final

The 2011 Miami Open women’s singles final match was between No.8 seed Victoria AZARENKA of Belarus and No.16 seed Maria SHARAPOVA of Russia. Former World No.1 Maria Sharapova had been a runner-up twice in Miami in (2005-2006), whilst Azarenka won the title in 2009.

The 21-year-old Azarenka is even with the 23-year-old Sharapova with 2 wins each in their previous encounters leading into the final. Their last meeting was their first meeting in a final with the 1.8m Azarenka defeating the 1.88m Sharapova 6-4 6-1 in Stanford in the USA in 2010 on hard courts.

Azarenka is on a roll after defeated defending Miami champion and No.2 seed Kim Clijsters in the quarter finals 6-3 6-3 and No.3 seed Vera Zvonareva 6-0 6-3 in the semi finals.

Sharapova knocked out 2010 Miami semi finalist and No.4 seed Samantha Stosur 6-4 6-1 in the round of 16 before having two huge battles to win through to the final. In the quarter finals the triple Grand Slam champion emerged victorious over No.26 seed Alexandra Dulgheru after one minute shy of 3 and a half hours 3-6, 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-5). In the semi finals she powered through the final two sets to win against the conqueror of World No.1 Caroline Wozniacki – No.21-seeded Andrea Petkovic 3-6, 6-0, 6-2.

Azarenka won her 2nd Miami title in the past 3 years 6-1 6-4 after leading 6-1 4-0 before Sharapova won 4 of the next 5 games to fight back to 4-5. Azarenka won her second straight match against Sharapova, both the finals they have played and moves to 3-2 overall. Both women will be ranked in the Top 10 on Monday with Azarenka equalling her career-best at No.6 and Sharapova entering the Top 10 for the first time in over two years.
