Qatar Open in Doha 2013 Women’s Singles Qualifiers

Yulia PutintsevaThe 2013 Qatar Open in Doha women’s qualifying singles event was completed yesterday. The women’s qualifying began on Saturday 9 February with 32 players battling for the 8 spots allocated to qualifiers in the main draw of the singles event.

Of the 16 seeds in the qualifying five of them were defeated in the first round of qualifying, leaving 11 seeds amongst the 16 players in the final round of qualifying.

Once a player qualifies she earns 30 WTA ranking points for qualifying. Throughout the tournament the qualifiers keep their 30 points and add it on to the points they receive for whichever round they make it to except for a 1st round loss where the qualifier does not have the 1st round main draw points added to her qualifying points. For example, a 2nd round loss earns a qualifier 100 points, 70 like everyone else plus their 30. A 3rd round loss earns a qualifier 155, whereas everyone else would earn 125 points.

If a player is awarded a place in the main draw as a Lucky Loser she does not get the 30 WTA ranking points that a qualifier does. The Lucky Loser gets the 20 points she earned for making it to the final round of qualifying. Throughout the tournament the Lucky Loser keeps her 20 points and adds it on to the points allocated for whichever round she makes it to (except for a 1st round main draw loss). A 2nd round loss earns a Lucky Loser 90 points, 70 like everyone else plus her 20. A 3rd round loss earns her 145 points, 125 + 20 and a quarter final loss earns her 245 points, 225 + 20.

Pictured above is the No.1 seed in the qualifying Yulia PUTINTSEVA in the forward swing phase of this forehand ground stroke. Formerly representing Russia then since June 2012 representing Kazakhstan just moved up to WTA No.97 for the first time on her way to the Top 50. The 18-year-old Putintseva peaked at No.3 on the ITF Junior Tour being a singles runner-up at the 2012 Australian Open and the 2010 US Open as well as being a semi finalist at Roland Garros in 2010.

Those players’ names that are bolded in the list below are the 8 players who have qualified for the women’s singles main draw. The highest seeded player that loses in the final round of qualifying who signs-in to be eligible if a Lucky Loser spot becomes available is the player who replaces any 1st round withdrawal.

The highest ranked player to lose in the final round of qualifying was No.5 seed Daria GAVRILOVA. Next in line for a lucky loser spot is No.13 seed Mervana JUGIC-SALKIC, following Mervana would be No.16 seed Valentyna IVAKHNENKO.
