WTA Tour Finals 2010 Women’s Singles Draw

The WTA Tour Finals draw ceremony is being held at 6pm today in Doha, Qatar at the Khalifa International Tennis Complex. Victoria Azarenka won the women’s singles final in Moscow Russia today so will not be there in time for the ceremony. The 7 players who are attending are Caroline Wozniacki, Vera Zvonareva, Kim Clijsters, Francesca Schiavone, Samantha Stosur, Jelena Jankovic and Elena Dementieva.

Due to title sponsorship naming rights the official name is the Sony Ericsson Championships. This tournament runs from Tuesday 26 October through to Women’s Singles Final Day on Sunday 31 October. Only the Top 8 best performed players for the 2010 season qualify to play-off in this tournament. In no other tournament are you required to beat at least 4 if not 5 of the world’s Top 8 ranked players to win the title!

In the first 4 days of this 6-day tournament each of the 8 women will play against all 3 members of her group. Throughout the round robin matches the world’s best women try to achieve a place in the semi-finals by finishing in the Top 2 spots in their own group. On Day 5 the semi-finals are held where the players who finish at No.1 in their group play the player who finishes No.2 in the other group.

The event begins in a round robin format with 2 groups of 4 players, a white group and a maroon group. The colour that is assigned to each group is chosen according to the colours of the Qatari National flag.

Pictured above is 2010 Roland Garros singles champion Francesca Schiavone after she has made contact with the ball for this forehand drive that the 30 year old Italian has moved inside the baseline to play offensively. The 1.66m Schiavone broke into the Top 10 for the first time in her career this year and achieved her career high ranking of No.6 on June 7. This is the first time she has qualified for the WTA Tour Finals.

Schiavone has a great chance to climb higher up the rankings and sounds like she is very motivated and ready to embrace this opportunity. Schiavone spoke of her aims for the 2010 Sony Ericsson Championships when she announced her aims, “What I want from the Championships is to live everything, every point, with all of myself. I deserve to be there. I want to win my matches. For sure I want to enjoy it, but I also want to keep going forward. This is just the start for me.”
